 That box looks all to familiar, I've had them like that. At least you've got the experience and tools to help transform this poor hat back into it's proper shape
I swear, in my experience, "lay" people who sell hats on eBay are a fairly dumb lot. [can't really blame someone if they...
You could tell them you wear hats... religiously. lol Shame that they allow flip-flops yet not hats. Though, at least there's a touch of the old days in that policy. ;)

I wear felt year 'round and I live in Orlando, Florida... as in, it get's pretty darn hot here. I [currently] only own one straw hat and it doesn't see much wear.
Many don't seem to fare well with hot weather and felt, so you may just need to give it a shot and see if you like it...
Agreed, it's a much easier chore than expected. Just take your time and things should go well... unless you get one of those gems that just seem to pop right into the shape you desire and then things go MUCH quicker than normal.

I was going to mention the same thing about Indiana Jones. I slightly turned my latest Akubra Federation very slightly and have thus achieved a brim that's mildly wonky looking, the curve is off center. A look I really like.
