    More Akubra advice please

I've been contemplating adding a Campdraft to the hat stable for a while. For those who have both, just wondering if the open crown of the Campdraft is as boxy as the Fed IV? I really like the vintage-flavor boxy blocking of the Fed IV (I have 3) over more oval blocked hats. If the Campdraft is...

Stampede Strings, Wind Trolleys and Super Glue: How do you keep your hat on?

There's a very funny shot in an early "Raiders of the Lost Ark" promo showing Harrison Ford using a staple gun to attach hat to head. I've been tempted. Some days I don't even attempt wearing a nice brimmed hat (fedora or western) and just stick with a baseball cap. But, yes, I also vote for...

Anybody re-shaped an Akubra hemp-braid straw w/water or steam?

Thanks, JackieMatra! That's exactly the info I needed. I'll give it a shot.

Anybody re-shaped an Akubra hemp-braid straw w/water or steam?

You calling us hat devils...? ;) This is my first Akubra straw, after being dissatisfied with the crown shapes of cheaper toyo straw brands like Scala. So I wasn't sure what to expect. Sizewise, this Balmoral fits very much like a felt Akubra -- I wear a 58, and this is ever-so-slightly loose...

Anybody re-shaped an Akubra hemp-braid straw w/water or steam?

Calling all experts! I just got an Akubra Balmoral hemp-braid hat. Has anybody here tried re-shaping one of these hemp-braid straws using either the water or steam methods many of us commonly use on felt hats? While the Balmoral has a nice shape as is, I'd really like to re-do it with a higher...

    Hasidic Jewish hats

Thanks for that info. Saw lots of those black fedoras, especially, when I worked in mid-town Manhattan, near the Diamond and Garment Districts. I actually am Jewish (though not religious at all), but when I converted one of my black western Akubras into a fedora, my first thought was: "I look...

    Justified FX Hat

Took a look at your Facebook page -- that's great collection of artifacts and info you've gathered! I loved JUSTIFIED and will miss seeing new episodes. Gotta find time to watch the whole series over again from the start. Pretty cool that you connected with the show's costume/wardrobe person...

    Federation IV sizing

Absolutely! We Akubra folk are very lucky to have Sam Menche at Everything Australian, and Naomi and Trudi at Hats Direct. They're great at answering e-mails quickly, providing helpful answers and info, and shipping as promptly as possible. I'm sure there are other hat retailers who also go the...

    Federation IV sizing

Naomi and Trudi at Hats Direct are very helpful! I'm awaiting my third Fed IV (regular). When I ordered the first (Moonstone gray), I followed Hats Direct's suggestion and ordered a 59 (I reliably wear an Akubra 58). The 59 needed padding, but fit was OK. When I ordered my second (dark brown), I...

Wearing a fedora when it's windy

Had a hat blow off my head a couple of times, but never lost one. (yet!) If I know it's really windy, I'll just stick with a baseball hat, not a loved and valued Akubra. If it's breezy with an occasional gust, I might risk wearing a western hat with a stampede string (very practical addition).

    Australian Dollar weak again...

Money-wise, GREAT time to buy Akubras from Australia! Have you guys noticed the favorable Aussie vs. US dollar exchange rate right now? In the 5 years or so I've been buying hats from Aussie sellers, I don't think I've ever seen lower prices in US dollars. For anybody thinking about a new...

Which Akubra styles resemble these Spaghetti Western hats?

The Akubra Arena and Bobby hats are a relative bargain right now -- both under $90 (US) from Everything Australian (add about $23 for shipping). The Rough Rider is around $95. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of these hats. I should mention, 4" is a LOT of brim...

outback hats, western hats w removable hatbands?

I change bands on several of my hats, depending on mood and season. Depending on the type of band, if it's snug enough, it should stay where you put it (assuming you don't do handstands!). If it's an adjustable band -- a western-ish band with a buckle or a slide-adjustable horsehair band --...

Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology

Got my fedora and jacket ready... I'd been keeping an eye out for an Indy Exhibit tour stop in DC (I live in MD) and never saw any info...until it popped up in the paper when the exhibition was about to open at the Nat Geo museum. So, even though you may not see a city near you listed on the...

Which Akubra styles resemble these Spaghetti Western hats?

Akubra makes several wide-brim (3.5-4") western hats which might work for you. You'd have to make a few modifications to get the spaghetti-western look, but they don't require master-hatter skills. It's pretty easy to flatten the curled brims back to neutral by using a steam iron (high...
