Hmmm. Bound-edge brim, leather sweat, fully lined, but wool felt?
I can't tell from the two photos, and I'm not familiar with the DeSina brand name, but with features like that, I'd bet your hat is pure fur felt.
Even if it's not, what's five bucks?
Sounds like a really great find, lairddouglas.
If I'm following you correctly, the one you found is the British military style, with the tall crown and relatively narrow, dramatically downsloping brim. What color is it? Does it have the suspension type of sweatband or some other...
Akubra sizing has been discussed on other threads at length, but the executive summary is that most find they fit true to size while a substantial minority feel they run a size large, but with sweat and rain, shrink to fit just right.
My advice is to use a fabric tape to carefully measure...
Really?
I need to find out where you're shopping. I've never seen a quality, natural-bristle paintbrush for less than $25.
I just tried using my 4-inch one on my Sydney fedora. Worked pretty well. Tried a horsehair shoe brush mentioned earlier, too. It really worked well, maybe...
I agree with the posters above. Most people don't know squat about hats, and when they say you look like Bogy or Indiana Jones or whoever, it may come across as ignorant, but they're just trying to say something nice.
Now I would be the last person on earth to discourage you from getting a...
KeyGrip,
Definitely go for a pure rabbit fur felt Akubra, which typically run only slightly over your $100 budget. Akubras are far and away the best values in fur felt hats today, very high quality at a reasonable price, and they'll last practically forever.
In fact, the Sydney mentioned...
My dad, born 1923, and granddad, born 1900, are now both deceased, but they lived during the every-man-wears-a-hat era. Working class folks, they only had a couple of dress hats at any one time, and they were always gray or black ones that went with anything.
Neither of them wore a dress...
Interesting dynamic on this thread. Before Village Hat Shop owner Fred showed up, all the comments were critical; after he entered, they're saccharine sweet--until now.
Fred, as I stated prior to the love-in, I've never been in any of your retail stores, but I have dealt with...
Take it to a cleaner with a fur coat specialty. Call a local furier and get a referral. Any cleaner that works on mink, ermine, fox, etc. will be able to easily and safely clean your Mad Bomber.
Let's not get carried away here. Next thing I'll hear is the necessity of an edge-of-brim brush, in every color in the rainbow, of course.
You only need at most two hat brushes, one with light bristles for light colored hats, one with dark bristles for darker colored hats. If your hats are...
deanstuff,
If you're looking for a warm-weather hat for the casual activities you mention, take a look at the Tilleys. They make a lot of different ones in various materials, brim widths, and colors. Check them all out at www.tilley.com., but you'll probably be able to find one from another...
Tell us what kind of hat it is. That would help, as some makers put stiffener in, while the felt of others is inherently stiff.
For example, I got an Akubra Banjo Paterson a few years back and was initially disappointed that the "Heritage Collection" premium felt was so dang stiff, yet I...
I did not mean to scare you, but knowing you'd be a first-time naphtha user, simply wanted to stress safety. As long as you use it outdoors nowhere near an open flame, you'll be fine. The goggles and gloves probably aren't even necessary, but, again, I say safety first.
The EPA banned...
I have a Sterling silver with 14k gold trim Parker fountain pen my aunt gave me in 1970. Since I was only 11 then, it went in a drawer until I rediscovered it when I was about your age and began to write regularly with it. So, I've been in your situation and remember some of the same problems...
The original London Fog water resistant treatment will not discolor, but time and even a single dry cleaning can remove most all of it. Two light coats of Scotchguard will restore it to the same water resistance as when new, will not discolor either, but will not last as long and dry-clean out...
The Lawson was runner-up a few years ago when the Banjo Paterson won out. The crowns of these two Akubras are identical--height, taper, bash/pinch, but the Lawson's brim is bound, and, at 3 inches, 1/4 inch wider than the Banjo's. Though I really like the braided Kangaroo leather hatband on...
OK, Tone, just for you, I compared a Nullarbor Tan Bushman and Fawn Squatter side by side and measured them with a metal machinist's rule.
Bushman: 5 1/2-inch open crown height. No taper to crown. 3 1/4-inch bound-edge brim. 1/2-inch ribbon band. Imperial Quality felt. Fully lined...
First, there will be headaches, then seizures, hallucinations, and, before long, you'll be stark raving mad.
But, hey, if the hat looks good, then it's well worth it!
