It’s the only authentic ribbon I can get here in the uk. Just a pity it’s not available in 50mm. But as you say it’s very good quality and nice to work with.
Hi Rick. I used a sewing machine which has a start/stop button. It allows me to stitch at a very slow speed so I can concentrate on following the binding edge accurately. Yes it’s a great feeling when you nail another part of the hat making process.
I’ve been working on my brim binding and I’m now at the stage where it’s consistently good. I can’t get good quality grosgrain here in the UK so use Petersham instead.
I’m struggling to understand how the seam start/finish is supposed to look on this method. Have previously used the closed loop method but would like to give this a go. Is anyone able to elaborate or post a close up?
I started wearing hats and caps out of necessity, being bald and fair skinned. As you’ve pointed out, you will make mistake purchases along the way. All part of discovering what you do and don’t like in a hat. Tall crowns with little to no taper is my preference. One of the reasons I decided to...
Hi thanks again for the info. Yes import duty is always going to be an issue when importing from USA. But since UK left the EU it’s made importing from anywhere more expensive.
Thankyou, that’s interesting. I’ve had 3 from GMB. A grey and a sage green. Both had good stiffness and the flanged brims had a good snap to them. I then bought a bone colour which had very little stiffness in the brim.
Hi. No it’s the whole brim. But since posting earlier I’ve noticed it’s the pale colours which seem to be the issue. I’m wondering if it’s just a coincidence or theres more to it. All the capelines have been dress weight between 120 and 130 grams.
I’ve bought half a dozen capelines here in uk from various suppliers. All Czech made rabbit fur. So far the most expensive have the best finish that require minimal pouncing. But what I’ve noticed within the same supplier, is the inconsistency of the stiffening. Is this common? Have any of you...
The felt colour is "mink" and the grosgrain ribbon is chestnut brown. Both from suppliers I've not used before. In the process of trying out what's available in the UK.
In my humble opinion, because hat wearing is so uncommon these days you're already one up when it comes to style.
There are so many options of brim size, crown height and colour. You can dress up, you can dress down. It's all about what you like, and having the confidence to pull it off. Just...
