Like Lizzie I come from a working class background and shows like Father Knows Best did not reflect reality as we knew it either. But who expected it to? It was a show, it was supposed to be phony. They might as well have had a pet unicorn in the back yard, or a beautiful genie who popped out of...
Before central heating, the only way to be comfortable in winter was with warm clothing. If you could afford it, a wing back chair (to keep off drafts) in front of the fireplace, carpet slippers instead of shoes, and a smoking jacket in place of your suit coat and you were ready to relax with a...
It's not my idea. That is what Harley Davidson called it. I know what they looked like, I owned a dozen HDs at different times, the oldest a 1929 45. A friend had a 1913 V twin with transmission in the rear wheel, it was an original unrestored model and it was gray. Supposedly they switched to...
The color used by HD was called "khaki". They started using it in WW1 (before that, their bikes were gray). In the thirties they started offering different colors.
I have seen Shemp Howard as a bartender in a W C Fields picture (The Bank Dick) and in one of the Thin Man series (Another Thin Man) starring Myrna Loy and William Powell. No doubt he did other pictures, those ones I happen to have in my collection.
I find the vintage fans are noisy and only have one or at the most 2 speeds. Oscillating fans leave me gasping between sweeps. For the bedroom I prefer the cheapest small non oscillating fan. Usually low speed is enough for comfort unless the weather is sultry. Oil it annually with a drop of...
While I am not a fan of green cars all the color combinations mentioned so far were popular at the time and looked good at the time. I am a little puzzled as to why blue and white is suddenly ugly. I wonder if it is because today's cars are so bland and colorless. Maybe if the younger people see...
Is this really news to anybody? Such atrocities were common in Japanese held areas, to civilians and military POWs. The best you could hope for was neglect and starvation. I guess nobody talks about these things anymore. At one time they were common knowledge.
Who says the old one lasted that long? It might have been replaced 10 times for all you know.
I like the sealed bearings, saves greasing the water pump every 2000 miles. Did you grease them before you put the pump on the car?
Who was paying Confederate soldiers pensions? It was my understanding that the Confederacy ceased to exist after 1865.
And that this led to the custom in the South, of giving wounded veterans preference when it came to civil service jobs. Eventually any kind of injury or disability became an...
According to this US News story the federal government is still paying out one Civil War pension.
http://www.usnews.com/news/newsgram/articles/2013/07/03/one-civil-war-veterans-pension-remains-on-governments-payroll
As the story dates from 2013 this may have changed.
They say the pension...
I have stopped radiator leaks with cinnamon and also with nutmeg when I didn't have cinnamon. It only takes half a teaspoon or less. I suppose pepper would work as well.
Speaking of old people, how would you like to meet the grandson of President John Tyler, 10th president of the United States?
Here was a man who was born in 1790, became president in 1841, and was elected to the first Confederate congress in 1861.
He had 8 children with his first wife and 7...
Have heard of using oatmeal, condensed milk, and even cinnamon to stop leaks. Now if someone would suggest brown sugar and buttered toast we could have breakfast.
Water pump grease is still available but not at every garage and parts store. If you don't have any, the waterproof grease they use in outboard motor lower units is a good substitute. No more than half a pump at each oil change, don't over lube or you could gum up your radiator.
