"In the early 1800s, the term swag was used by British thieves to describe any amount of stolen goods. One definition given in Francis Grose's 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is "any booty you have lately obtained,.... To carry the swag is to be the bearer of the stolen...
"Swag" used to mean "loot". If you looked, you could probably find a cartoon from 100 years ago with a burglar wearing a black mask and carrying a sack labelled "swag". Or possibly a political cartoon highlighting graft.
Not exactly pertinent to this thread but, we seem to have jumped that shark anyway. So maybe I can change the subject.
In the supermarket today, saw cauliflower for $4.97. When did that happen? I swear it was $2.97 a month ago. This was not your fancy Whole Foods organic cauliflower, just plain...
I got stopped by the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) for riding my motorcycle with the headlight off. It happened to be a 1968 BSA and headlights on only applied to 1970 and newer. First he wouldn't believe my bike was that old. Next he had to get out his hiway code and look it up.
I knew...
If you are used to shopping in thrift stores keep an eye open for Dress For Success by John Molloy. It has a lot of information and was written for people in your situation. Specifically, men who needed to dress well for work but had no idea how. I know you aren`t talking about work but the same...
Pumpkin pie is basically a custard pie, I found out. One Halloween I had 3 extra pumpkins so I thought I should make a couple of pies. By the time I got done skinning and cooking the pumpkin and adding all the milk and eggs and stuff I had about 5 gallons of pie filling. I lost track of the...
You will need a good axe a splitting axe a couple of wedges a sledge hammer and possibly a chain saw.
The wood should be cut to the appropriate length for your stove
Wood splits easier when frozen solid (possibly not an option for you)
It splits easier from the bottom up. In other...
Back in the fifties and sixties antique car owners and their families sometimes dressed in age appropriate clothing especially for judging events. I think it got to the point of being really overdone, with different people vying with each other for the most eye catching costume till it got to...
How do you figure trams are not traffic? What is the difference between a tram and trolley bus in service? I really want to know. To me an electric bus could take the place of a tram but be more versatile, cheaper to build and run, more flexible, and eliminate the costly and dangerous tracks...
I thought it was "might as well face it you're a dick head in love".
A guitar teacher told me when Guantanamera came out all his students wanted to learn it after they heard it on the radio. He got requests for Once On A Meadow, One Ton Of Metal and I don't know what all.
Speaking of requests...
Many cities still have trolleys or streetcars but all are subsidized by the government. Diesel buses are cheaper to run but smelly and noisy. I think it is time to look into electric buses. The hold back has always been the batteries but today we have way better batteries than in the past.
Seriously, trolley cars were obsolete by the 1920s. They never would have been built if rubber tires had been invented. Trolley buses are much better. In fact today battery technology has advanced to where we could have battery electric buses. They could keep the trolley wire on top and just...
My hat is off to you for having such vivid detailed dreams. And being able to remember them. I seldom dream and when I do it is pretty drab humdrum stuff, basically reviewing memories of the previous 2 or 3 days.
