If a bloke is wearing a watch 'till the leather strap rots, maybe a quartz retro job will suit his lifestyle and wallet best.
No crime in that, but can I suggest get a chrome one. It will be a little more durable - the plating wears off the gold ones rapidly and they look really crummy.

Consider a Hamilton Khaki Automatic in your search. I have two - a black military dial and a silver dial. Quality is good and they are reasonably priced on eBay. I feel they are attractive without being showy or blingy, and they have an American heritage - sort of.
To me, color photo's of Britain from this era have a real quality of stillness about them.
