How do you think a vintage diner would do in modern times?

Hi The problem was that the gas price went up, rent went up, and business went down. $2500 a month for gas is cheap when your gross is $20,000 a month. It's not when your gross is $4000 a month. I wonder if new griddles are more efficient? No clue, not in the business. Later

How do you think a vintage diner would do in modern times?

Hi Actually many of the better burgers I've had over the years are made that way. There's a new place called Tucker's in OKC that serves burgers from a griddle. They have a few different toppings, and you can get a single, double, or triple (I think). They use pretty good meat and you can...

BUCKAROO BONANZA! - The Hats that Major Mike Moore Makes

Hi The last time I was in Covington, late in 2012, I asked Mike to save back a large Silver Mist felt body to make into a John Wayne Cavalry hat. Between my work and the boiler this Spring, I was finally able to get back to Tennessee to get the crown fitted correctly. I was concerned about...

    Excessive posting? ... Interesting.....

Hi Tom How doe we decide if a car is German or Japanese now? My Subaru was made in Indiana (yeah American Jobs), but the profits were taxed in Japan (boo). Mercedes has a good sized plant in Mid-Alabama, but the profits are taxed in Germany. I'll get another Subaru when this one finally...

    Question About Re-Blocking A Hat

If he's REALLY close, I'd definitely take him the one you like the least and have him do the conversion. If that works out, take the other two. Just my $0.02

What Did You Drink Last Night?

Hi O.K., I know you actually like Hamm's, but when I was in college 30 plus years ago we used to call Hamm's, Slams because if you didn't hurry up and slam it down, you might taste it. Schlitz went back to their pre 1960's formula and it's decent beer again. Is Hamm's the same as it would...

Better Deal - Optimo or VS

Hi Your call, a $1000 hat that you feel is worth $1000 is better than a $400 hat that you think is worth $200, but a $1000 hat that you think is worth $400 is not as nice as $400 hat that you think is worth $400..... Just my $1000 (right).

    John Wayne's Akubra?

Hi Sam Hope you get a look at this from up there. It ain't an Akubra, and it wasn't under $100, but I like it a lot. Buckaroo Hatters put this together for me. Wish we'd met. RIP Sam Craig!!!

    Akubra Overload

Hi I'd check Texas personally. A friend of mine from work was going to retire to that area, but settled for Eastern Colorado because the prices in New Mexico were sky high in about 2005. She and the hubby sold the place in Colorado when they were offered about 2.5 x what they had in it. I...

    Excessive posting? ... Interesting.....

Could have been worse. My parents left home one day with a Plymouth Barracuda with a V-8 when I was 15, and came home with a Plymouth Scamp. I totaled it a few years later and I never felt particularly bad about that. You had to use both feet driving it, one on the brake and one on the gas or...

How do you think a vintage diner would do in modern times?

Hi The local diner in my home town closed after many, many owners and at least 60 years because of the price of gas for the griddles went WAY UP. The gas was costing $2500 a month, and you had to leave the gas on all day because eggs are the first thing sold in the morning and in case someone...

    Western, anyone?

Hi I finally was able to go pick up my John Wayne hat from Buckaroo Hatters. Seven inch open crown and a 4 inch brim. All bunny fur in Silver Mist. I walked Shiloh Military Park in the rain for 2 hours, and the hat still looks the same. Rocky did a lot of the shaping and he did a really...

    All Weather Western Hat

Hi Oddly in my opinion, the British issued fur felt Bush hats during WW2 to the troops in both the Desert and Burma. A search on WW2 Bush hat turned up dozens of pictures. Akubra still makes that hat, but their other hats are just as good for your purpose. Straw hats don't take to being wet...

    What's For Breakfast...

Hi About 5-10 years ago my Dad had some sort of infection and he was given a very strong antibiotic. After that he had trouble digesting his food, but he wouldn't eat Yogurt. Yogurt is supposed to have the organisms in it that help digest food. The Pro-biotic pill is probably just as good...
