I have only handled one Durable jacket and it was pretty similar in style to the one posted *but it did not have side cinches). It was it think like.....the third vintage jacket I ever bought. It was nothing special. For some reason, I sorta thought less of it than the old Brent Car Coat I...
I don't recall seeing that one when you posted it @JMax . No wonder its gone. But knowing you posted it at least gives me some consolation that it was likely too small for me as it may have been for you. I am close to your size but not quite the same......I have a few KNOPFs and am always...
Alas, the Car Coat is the '57 Bel Air 4 door........................ while its Half Belt cousin is the 2 door having all the fun, getting all the interest, and bringing the much higher prices. Eventually though---it will be cool and desirable. Unlike ColdPlay.....
SOME DAY...........one of these Cal Straight Zips is gonna pop up outta the woodwork in my size and price range...... and I will tell myself that I am complete and no longer need to hunt vintage leather.......... Yep......I'll LIE......
Another grainy possibility......
I lean toward it being Goat......... mainly because Aviator type jackets--at least the later military issue type are traditionally Goat. Its admittedly a fairly thin theory to be basing the hide ID on though. That said, a lot of Old Goat is super grainy and...

I love the Lounge but I gotta say I agree!!!! I am really really loving this thread!!!!!!!! Comparing theories, askin questions, solvin' mysteries..........and here @tmitchell59 goes and picks up a new piece of evidence with a FANCY BACK no less!!! That IS a Fancy Back too!!! I saw the...
Or even different labels by THE SAME manufacturer within the same year?? One would THINK they used one label at a time because things were simpler back then but who knows?
Good question. This is assuming they used only one label in any given era. I always understood the "giant hercules" was the older label. But I have no factual reason to hold this belief.
These Catalogs are excellent.
Sorry for not seeing this thread activity sooner---
OK as if we needed to twist this up even further, be advised that my jacket was handled and had some level of repair done by the Ralph Lauren Vintage curators at their store in San Francisco (I believe it was the...
This is pretty self explanatory that the pocket began in '38 (assuming the catalogs are accurate). BTW--gotta love that FREEZING TEST!!!!!! The Barrel Test is basically how the leather is tanned in many processes. How bout looking your Horsehide RIGHT IN THE FACE!?!???!?!!?!!!!! The old ads...
That is what I had said previously. Monarch may have been a bit of a Red Herring on these. They may have made other Hercules models which would be where the connection comes from. But for this model, the connections to Monarch are pretty non existent from what I know. The RW connections are...
What throws me is the lack of the chin strap on mine...... no signs of it being cut off or otherwise removed. We were initially thinking mine was a later year perhaps when this feature was discontinued......
This is the inside of mine........ just to add to the confusion........ It has the tag for the adjustable collar but no collar and it has the corduroy facing on the inner collar and also on the backside of the collar
I don't know how I missed being tagged on these discussions!! I had thought I brought my jacket up in its own thread but then realized I sloppily blabbed about it in Finds and Deals!!! It should be represented in these threads that are on point so it can help with the research!!
I think its...
