Hope to get out on some 1940's period skis this winter if we get any snow!! It's 67ºF today in the Washington DC area.
I was photographing some of my period ski boots last weekend...here are a few of them:

Grüß Di' Bergkameraden,
Some great looking rucksacks that people have posted...really love the 'minty' Deuter Tauern Rucksack. I have a few Tauerns and other Deuter wartime Gebirgsjäger rucksacks, as well as a few other makes:
The Tauern Rucksack is very comfortable to climb and hike with...
Grüetzi bei Gott Bergkameraden,
Here's a great film that a friend of mine created from a recent trip in the Swiss Alps:

Ski Heil Kameraden,
I've been skiing on wooden x-country and Telemark skis since the late 1970's...Have used many different types from vintage to more modern...Plus don't forget the leather ski boots. Here's a great website with info on how to treat your wooden skis...
Here's a little history of the US 45th Infantry Division's emblem which was a swastika up until WW2:

Interesting story...but hard to believe some of it...especially the taking of the flag from the Reichstag...and possibly the stealing of Goering's Mercedes. First, the Russians fought the Battle of Berlin from 20 April 1945 until 2 May 1945. The Reichstag, which was gutted by fire in 1933, was...
Servus Costin,
The "Bilgerie" are some great looking boots. Looks like they have a standard "Vibram" mountain boot sole. I've seen a similar pair of these boots at the Gebirgsjäger museum in Sonthofen. They were identified as Berg-Reitsteifel or Mountain-Riding Boots...generally worn by...
Last summer for my 50th birthday, I did a 2 day climb in the French Alps up to 10,000 feet elevation with a 1930's Deuter Tauern Rucksack loaded with period gear and clothing. It worked just fine and was surprisingly comfortable.

Hello Costin,
Thanks for the photos you posted. I like the one with the three soldiers...love the old gear with the wooden skis and Alpenstock...looks like WWII vintage or just after.
Here's my WWII Romanian mountain troop beret:
Costin,
The photos work now. Man, those are some funky looking soles!!! Never seen anything like that before. Maybe you can take them to a boot-maker and have him replace the rubber soles with leather and metal cleats.
Here are a few period (1930-40's) mountain boot soles that I have in...
Greetings Costin,
Your boots sound interesting, but your link to the photo does not work. Are World War II Romanian Uniforms and Equipment easy or hard to find there? I have a Romanian Mountain troop beret in my collection...would be nice to complete a trooper with full uniform and kit.
Nice...
Can't go wrong with Henry Fonda in "The Immortal Sergeant."

Servus Charles,
1a) Repro trousers...some are Berghose from Lost Battalions, others are M-43 trousers from various makers.
1b) Breeks(???) not familiar with that term, but if you mean the "Bundhose" or "Knickers" (guess that's "undies" in your neck of the woods! :o ) they are converted...
Servus Dan und Bergkameraden,
Project Edelweiss is a fantastic period mountaineering event. I wasn't able to attend this past July, but I did attend last summer's event in the French Alps. I posted a write-up in the WWII section on this forum...
Grüß Di' Kameraden,
The German Gebirgsjägers (mountain troops) had various forms of "Jägerbarts" (Hunter's beards) that were worn:
They even developed a special gas mask for these Jägers:
Jägerbart vor!
Patrick
Grüß Di' Ian und Bergkameraden,
Thanks for the kind remarks. As for the sketches used in my display, they come from various period mountaineering books and manuals (civilian and military) that I have in my collection...mostly German, Austrian, and Swiss techniques.
Berg...
Hei Martti,
Thanks for posting those great period films! Now if I could just find some Reindeer here in Northern Virginia to pull my Akja when it snows!!!! :D
Cheers,
Patrick
