Driving golden era cars in the modern era

I get the names now! I always liked that model of car, and it became more interesting once I found out that was the car Donald Turnupseed drove. I understand they were quite common, though!

    What was in my wallet?

Agreed. I could never go wallet-less, it would be too messy.

    A 1940s deadstock dress ???

Looks like it to me too! I also have a hostess gown thats definitely from the early-mid 40's, no back zipper (buttons up the front) but it does have a small tie in the back. I suspect it might have been added because the fabric doesn't quite match. Did back ties definitely not exist in the...

    What was in my wallet?

Could be... Purse snatchers also have a harder time absconding with larger, heavier handbags of today, so maybe it's a good thing we carry the kitchen sink with us ;)

    the morning routine

I like that people here manage to eat breakfast. I can get in a cup of tea these days, but skipping breakfast is a bad holdover from college. Most mornings I had to get up at 5.45am to make an 8.00am lecture (long bus commute), and this was especially hard in winter since it would be pitch...

    Rue's Movie Picks

Ella Raines is so beautiful, isn't she? I've only seen her in Phantom Lady (1944) - I've gotta catch The Web. Good luck with the move Rue :) Just think about watching movies in your new house once its set up!

Scarcity of Roles for People of Color

I didn't know much about him except for a few short bios in books before I watched The Bridge on the River Kwai, then I read up on him a bit more. What a talented and interesting man. Did anyone catch TCM a few weeks back showing how Arabs were portrayed in classic films? They all seemed to...

    Happy Birthday Tony Bennett!

Hooray, happy birthday Tony! :) I have a funny story about him: Years ago, my aunt was at Nathan Philip's Square in Toronto, and he was in town doing a show. She was in a sort of crowd of people, and he walked right by, but nobody reacted! Never one to keep silent, my aunt called out "Hey...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I thought so much of "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown" reading that! I like a tree that I feel a little sorry for, too. :) Materialism will always take over though...

Warner Brothers : "Tales from the Gangster Squad"

Agreed. I too keep seeing him as Spicoli lol Giamatti, to me, wouldn't be as ideal as Gandolfini, but still a far better suggestion than Penn.

Hitchcock's earliest film found in NZ

Wow, what a great find! That was one of the big mysteries of lost film footage, along with the butchering of The Magnificent Ambersons and Greed. I wonder if they'll recover the remaining reels.

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

I just caught this... My brain has exploded a little bit. Unless I'm mistaken, you'd have to match the engine's RPM up exactly with the transmission? I can hear the grinding now! :eeek: Would this be easier on Golden Era cars?

    What was in my wallet?

Guilty lol There's another change from the Golden Era wallet: I'll bet they used cash constantly, whereas now its almost a novelty. I never seem to have any! Thats true, isn't it? In one of my favourite novels, Beverly Clearly's Fifteen (written in 1955), she is describing a geeky fellow and...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I've used mine a few times, but on deserted, pitch-black Northern Ontario roads at night. Traffic is too heavy everywhere else... I wonder why that is? Here's something I've seen steadily disappear: Real Christmas trees! When I was a kid, my family and many others still decorated real trees...

Warner Brothers : "Tales from the Gangster Squad"

Ooh he's great in period pieces! "Toons..." *Exhales cigarette smoke* But alas, time takes its toll...

    What was in my wallet?

Great sources. It seems that women and men carry more - much more - in their wallets and handbags than in the Golden Era. I can just barely squeeze my phone, wallet, and keys into a vintage handbag... No room for my make-up, advil, gum etc. Back to wallets. One thing that you definitely...

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

lol!! Thats one of my favourite lines. Is that a Tudor? I saw one in awful condition a few weeks back, and I wanted to steal it and fix it up like you. Its going to look great!

    Curler help needed!

Ever take out your set and your curls are curled so tight, you have to brush them out for a while before they look good? Or conversely, your hair didn't curl enough for whatever reason and your hair falls flat? If you towel dry your hair really well before setting, it should come out just right :)

    Curler help needed!

That's the problem - Hair won't dry properly from dripping wet unless you leave it in the set for 12-14 hours, more if you have longer hair. Give it a vigorous rub with the towel before you set it, and that should do the trick. This will also solve the problem of your sets being either too...

Going to the doctor in the "Golden Era"?

It's interesting to read about experiences with American health care. In Canada and the UK, we have publicly funded health care. It's great, but our wait times for treatments, specialist appointments, and doctors are quite high, leading to the joke "If it doesn't kill you, it'll go away on...
