"Mad Men" on AMC (US) - (Spoilers Within)

Is that why he's angry at Sterling? I hadn't quite figured it out. I thought maybe it was because as Don tries to turn over a new leaf, there's Roger always trying to tempt him back to his old ways. -Dave

Raccoon/Fox Tails on Radio Aerial - Why?

That's an Esso reference, isn't it? "Put a tiger in your tank." -Dave

Thanks Lizzie, I was hoping you’d chime in. -Dave

Raccoon/Fox Tails on Radio Aerial - Why?

What's your basis for saying so? -Dave

Raccoon/Fox Tails on Radio Aerial - Why?

This was asked on the HAMB, and if there’s anyone who is going to know the origin of this practice, I think it’ll be the folks on the Fedora Lounge. Here’s what I had to say: I also recall reading in a coffee table book on '50s cars that some insurance companies would charge higher rates...

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

I imagine a pork pie. Perhaps as described by an older person. -Dave

Hot Rods, Rat Rods, and Classics

Very nice. Tractor grille notwithstanding, there's nothing "rat" about that one. -Dave

Hot Rods, Rat Rods, and Classics

Fletch you have a far different take on Type 2 than I. To me the Type 2 is generally (though, admittedly not always, particularly with regard to people who originated the look like Coddington and Buttera) the opposite of an expression of mechanical aptitude, aesthetics, or re-using something...

    The Adventurer's Gear Thread

When I was in 6th or 7th grade I built a small diorama of LRDG or SAS vehicles in North Africa. One was a Willys Jeep and one was a Dodge Weapons Carrier. Thanks for bringing back such a good memory! -Dave

Hot Rods, Rat Rods, and Classics

I’ll agree with this. There’s something about worn, original paint juxtaposed with fresh chrome, wheels, and tires that speaks to me. I still say your average rat rod is built more for shock value than anything else, however, and like everything there’s shades of gray. -Dave

Hot Rods, Rat Rods, and Classics

I doodled this up this morning while daydreaming about this thread. It’s meant to be an illustration only, but I think it’s a pretty good explanation of what I envision when I use these terms. The Quintessential Traditional Hot Rod: 1929 Ford roadster on 1932 rails (pinched) with a Deuce...

favorite cars of the golden era

Funny, after so long seeing nothing but boat tails, a conventional trunk on a '35 Auburn roadster just looks wrong. -Dave

    Show us your vintage home!

Now there's a kitchen with character. I like the tiles. Where'd you get them? And what's "Heathrow"? -Dave

    Student Jalopies of the 1940s

Haha, I’m so square, I read that as “Capacity: Five Gallons.” Yes, I agree that 5+1 in the front seat of any Model T is certainly optimistic. I’m not sure that three would fit and still allow operation! -Dave

    Golden Era phone books

According to the old telephone exchange link above, one of the little burgs I drive through on my way to work, called Munger, had MUnger as its exchange. How convenient. -Dave

    Student Jalopies of the 1940s

Just noticed. Is "Sieg Heil" written underneath the license plate on the Cal Tech kid's jalopy? Weird. -Dave

    Student Jalopies of the 1940s

That, via the 1960s "Music With Von Drake", was one of my major inspirations for my love of big band music, 1940s fashion, Model T touring cars, and hot rods. I think I first saw it when I was 4 or 5 and nearly wore the VHS tape out over the years. I think Monogram even released a model kit...

    Vintage Phones

Sorry. This is what I get for posting from an iPhone. Your reference to the weight of old telephones made me think of something I'd once read about bankers sometimes using their hefty telephones to club would-be attackers. I don't think there's an "app" to use my phone for that! -Dave
