Today as I was leaving work for lunch a co-worker said "You look so cute!" (I'm wearing a black 30s dress I made and a pink cardigan sweater.) I get to the grocery store and I'm greeted with a guy saying "Halloween." I did respond to his highly original insult, but if I wrote it here it would...
SOme examples of fashion of the late 1910s:
The dresses were often sleeveless, low-cut, lots of beads, skirts were usually layered and empire waisted. Lots of frills! Bandeaus were very popular, as were large, frilly hats -- though not as extreme as the decade before...
I process payments for a large company. I wear what I make (see the thread in the Powder Room.) With the exception of sleeping, cleaning, exercise, and lounging around the house, I always wear what I make.
Wow everyone. Great stuff!
My husband has been in Reading for the past two days so I've been a little sewing machine. Last night and this afternoon I made this:
I'm also sewing off some anxiety!!!!
I finished this today. I thought it was going to be ugly, but it turned out ok. I'm not too happy with the green edging I put on the bolero sleeves, but I ran out of orange :( I'll fix it, though....
With bolero
Without bolero
Detail of the fabric and the little orange flecks...
I totally agree with the OP. I've only been into it since 1998, but I still look at different types of cuts and seams in dresses/patterns and know almost exactly what year it's from -- if not the exact year than the exact "era" (ie, late 1930s, mid 1940s, etc). I didn't really actively study...
DPD = Again, your patterns rule! They remind me of mine!!
As long as there is Jo-Ann's my credit card will never be paid off. I bought all the VV patterns I didn't already have in their sale today :o
A friend copied this one for me.
And two I bought from the Vogue sale:
I think this one looks better made up than on the picture.
Goning to hit Jo-Ann's on Saturday for more bargain Vogues AND a 10% off coupon on top of that! Whoo!
Everyone is soooo talented! I love everything. GG -- is that bolero Simplicity 3748? If so, I love that one! I made it here in a fun summery fabric:
And I recently made this:
It needs a pink belt! Also, I know the big flowers kinda clash about, but that's fine with me. My pleat...
I've got thin 30s eyebrows/makeup, 50s/60s cat's eye glasses, 1920s bobbed hair, and sew all of my clothes from 30s and 40s patterns, but usually make them in fabrics people from the 30s and 40s wouldn't dream of using.
I'm all over the place and love it/don't care what others think. I've...
I wouldn't. I've seen many early 30s Hollywood patterns in my size and passed them up because of the price :( But I have spent that much on a few, though, too :o
I got a few newies:
From 1939
And what their daughters what have worn, 1969. I'm developing a slight obsession with...
