Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

That becomes less of a reality the higher one moves up the ladder, at least as to academic graduate degrees. Out of necessity really: a thesis or dissertation requires original research. As to professional degrees (law, medicine, divinity school) where no original research is required, it can...

Flight Jackets for dummies...please skool me...

If I can offer one bit of advice: research before you buy. This forum, as well as Vintage Leather Jackets Forum, are good links to keep. Eventually, keep the links of the various manufacturers and their retailers. Try to determine what you like, what you don't like, ask questions, and learn from...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

My undergrad Constitutional Law prof and pre- law advisor, Charles A. Hollister. Prior to him there were some who were good, even quite good, teachers, instructors, profs. But no one before or after him was able to really kindle that fire inside of me, the desire to not only succeed or even...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Reminds me of a 1970 article in my prep school's newspaper that referred to our conduct at a football game as that of "upstart and unruly sophomores." Thus originated our game cheer: "U-P-S-T-A-R-T! Are we upstart? Hell, YES !!" And every five years at class reunions, to the embarrassment of...

    Philosophical: What is real "home(land)"?

I'm a fourth generation Chicagoan, and my son is the fifth generation. One of my great grandfathers was a Teamster (when they actually drove a team of horses) who was pressed into service to remove bodies from the Iroquois Theater fire of 1903. My grandfather helped to dig the State Street...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

What an entertainer! She was more animated than the cartoon character!

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I tend to agree. Saturday was cold: blustery wind out of the west, but my wife & I hiked downtown for exercise- about a 3 mile round trip. My new wool newsboy cap, fairly new ANJ-4 flight jacket and RAF jumper (sweater) almost kept me too toasty, but it made the bracing cold enjoyable. I'll take...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Best to have a rebuttal already written up, or have one of the Theatre Kids who witnessed the episode, ready to refute same. I find that people are generally fair minded when presented with believable fact.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Similar vein: when some new client would ask me if I was a public defender or a "real lawyer." I'd reply that " ... the State Supreme Court and the Federal District Court have declared me to be a Real Lawyer.. but what the hell do they know compared to you, right??"

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

And likewise, I can point to a 92 year old lodge brother who handles arcane aspects of his iPhone with skills that'd put a 17 year old to shame. Of course, he worked decades as an engineer. Thus, I think that so much of this has less to do with chronological age and more to do with the way that...

What are your favorite Aero designs?

Military flight jackets. Everyone has their favorite Aero products- I get that. But for my money there is nothing that beats the look of those jackets worn by men who took to the skies to "right a deadly wrong:" the ANJ-4, B-3, the RAF Irvin, A-2, B-6, and those Navy jackets as well.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I came on the scene here relatively late, but I have heard that in days past the rules of engagement were a lot looser and the exchanges could be quite caustic.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

My dad's uncle had served in the cavalry prior to the First World War and later joined the Navy when the US declared war in 1917. Dad served in the Army in WWII, as did three of my uncles. I was too young for Nam: had I been drafted I supposed I'd have gone. Enlisting in peacetime seemed like...
