Great thread!
When I was a 14-year old kid (the year was 1982) I was fascinated with the TV show "Tales of the Gold Monkey", the adventures of a pilot and his Grumman Goose in the South Pacific just before WWII.
Now, working as a captain in NY Harbor, I see the occassional seaplane landing...
Happy New Year, all!
Yes, Filson gear is first rate, very tough! I have owned afew of their tin-cloth jackets, a single tin pair of pants and some of their field bags/luggage. Great stuff.
I own a 641N Field Coat. The reason for the high placement of the wool lined slash pockets is when...
The Eastman Luftwaffe jackets are very nice indeed! There is a company called Noble House in Germany that also does a nice Luftwaffe style jacket (even has a blue linen lining...not as nice as moleskin like in the ELC, alas!). And Spearhead Militaria sells a Luftwaffe and a "Erich Hartmann"...
I have owned several ELC A-2 jackets, both their "house" contract as well as their original maker contracts. IMHO, the knits are a bit loose and flimsy. I've had some go to tatters on a repro M-422a in less then a year. Maybe we just have nastier moths/boll weevils here in NYC? :)
All I know...
Ahh, yes. It always starts with one...and then two...and then you have a rack like the one in the pic posted by 442RCT! Very impressive collection, sir!
Yessir, deanglen, I wear the ol' collar snapped down. After a while it gives a stand collar that nice well-worn roll.
I respect everyone's opinion on the subject, but as far as ascertaining animal welfare in the Chinese leather industry, well, that's above my paygrade, as they say :)
I am...
Welcome to the Lounge!
Most A-2 color references are to seal brown (the dark chocolate brown) and russet (a lighter milk chocolate brown). Havana brown may not be an "official" color but I think it refers to a more reddish-russet (mahogany) brown. I just bought a Made-in-China A-2 repro from...
I would rate the Made-in-China A-2 as better then The Cockpit and on par with Gibson & Barnes, though heavier duty horsehide in the Chinese A-2 but more authentic pocket dimensions in a G&B (the Chinese A-2 does have a pocket that is about half and inch taller then normal). The G&B horsehide A-2...
Sorry jon z (and any other folks who can't access the links). I need to find a way to post the pic from my digital camera memory card directly to FL. I am using a new laptop and still figuring the darn thing out! :)
Posting to a public site like facebook was the quickest (temporary) solution to...
I fell in love with the Wolverine 1000 mile boot and impulsively ran out to an authorized retailer (Neiman-Marcus) and tried them on. They were amazing! I was wearing medium weight socks and tried my normal size 11. I usually wear a wide (E or EE width) shoe so I was concerned with the width...

Here is a link to some details of the Made-in-China A-2 leather...
I recently bought their Havana brown A-2 horsehide leather jacket. It is heavy but quite soft. The stitching and seams are exact and straight, Zipper is a Talon clone YKK. Very good workmanship. All in all, a great jacket for the price.
I would definitely buy another leather jacket from them...
Thank you coffee! And you are right...already in the high flex areas (shoulders, elbows, underarms) where there is alot of creasing action, the grain is definitely coming out! I'm actually looking forward to some more rain!
And this jacket has a lighter tan/khaki thread stitching so the...
I ordered the size 46. I checked the measurements, emailed Barry (the sales rep on eBay) and rolled the dice. Sleeve length is always my greatest concern. But the jacket fits perfect. The leather sleeve is 24 inches and there is a 3 inch cuff. The cuffs are a wool blend and pretty sustantial...
It was 1982 and my favorite TV show was "Tales of the Gold Monkey". I was about 14 and fell in love with the lead character's Flying Tiger A-2 with the AVG Blood Chit on the back. I scrounged up enough money to buy a Schott A-2 and lovingly constructed my own blood chit (hand painted on a piece...
Looks nice! Love to see some outdoor pics when you post 'em.
I ordered a FQHH A-2 from Aero back on Sept. 4 and still haven't received it. I'm in the USA so it's probably being shipped across the pond by sea turtle! :)
