    Socks

Ah yes. "Clocks." Not made for decades, as far as I know.

    What is this object?

That was it. The photo I displayed was the only one my friend sent, but she confirmed there were brushes. So crumb broom it is. Thanks everyone!

    Does your name date you?

I've mentioned this here before, but I have a friend whose children are named Jacinda, Josiah, Jenna, Jeneane and Janelle. I told her they had to stop having kids as all the remained in the series was Jemima and Jehovah.

Every Time I Toss the Bacon Grease I Feel Guilty

Ever since a wisening-up episode with a plugged kitchen sink drain, I've been saving cooking fats and grease in a coffee can by the stove for tossing when it gets about half full. Every time I do, I think about the government wartime program to collect excess cooking fats for turning into...

    POW camp to be preserved

And perhaps there was a desire to erase the memories of the war from sight?

    What is this object?

A friend has turned this up and asked for help identifying it. I'm flummoxed. Anyone know what this is? (Found in western Europe)

    POW camp to be preserved

It looks like they were built for another purpose before they were switched to POW housing, thus the sturdier construction.

Well, it's more editing time, right?

Hoboes, homeless and such during WW2?

I think most, if not all, of those images depict men during the 30s, when the Great Depression saw a greater population of vagrants who would otherwise be working. By the war years, as Lizzie pointed out very well, anyone who was able and not on the lam would be placed in a working position in...

    spearpoint collar help

They did a Fedora Lounge version of a spearpoint for me that turned out well. You might mention that when ordering. It's no longer on the site, but you can specify "one like you made for the Fedora Lounge." Be very specific about the rest of it: Tail length, full button front, cuff style, etc.

    Bow tie problem

I would think you aren't keeping the fabric flat as you're creating the bow, allowing that center bit of fabric to twist. This is the best tutorial I've ever found. I'm terrible at doing bows, and have to have this dumb thing open to follow step by step to get it right every time. But it does...

New to this - Looking for advice

There is a great deal to be learned from the threads here. Your first question, the difference between Armani and custom, is simple. One is off the peg, no matter how pricey. The other is made to fit you. And the range therein is very wide indeed. Just because you're buying a phat brand doesn't...

    What are you Writing?

Amen to that. I'd rather chew off my own foot than have to say "I didn't get this one..." Of course, there are sometimes situations where you just cannot track a person down for comment, or the story turns out to be codswallop. That's different (as long as you keep your editor in the loop)...

That was my experience, also. Ten years in radio teaches many lessons. I can still talk for exactly 30 seconds without a timer.

    What are you Writing?

I find that having constant deadlines forces me to keep writing, and that is a very good thing. I like the challenge of telling a quick story about an often dull event in a way that is fresh and interesting. It's rare to actually hit that mark. I'm producing around 4,000 words each week that...

The Mighty Eighth: New $500M HBO series from Spielberg/Hanks

I didn't realize this was an older bit of news. Now I'm also wondering at the holdup. The Game of Thrones theory seems plausible, actually.

Safety of Using Vintage Alarm Clocks

Once the motor goes, that's pretty much it for keeping things original. They stopped making such clocks decades ago and the parts are gone. At that point, it's off to the clock man to have a modern battery movement fitted. I've been trying to get my grandparents' mahogany cathedral shaped...
