I wrote several short stories for a while. Stopped when tried to write in a "noir" way, like Hammett and Chandler. And discovered that I was just doing carbon copy. And why a copy if I can read the original?! (Ross McDonald made a good work in this way, the best Chandler-copy all-around. But I...
This is a wonderful record!!
In fact, almost all tracks from this CD are very very good.
Skipe could play very seriously when wanted to do so; he had for a while "the Other Orchestra".
Msss Lizie, I will look for Freddie Fisher, never heard about this!
Anyway, I think that the...
Just discovered that Spike Jones and His City Slickers are very popular ever between those who usually wouldn't have any curiosity about 40s music. And ever more than several other orchestras.
Why this? A guy told me about he started to like Jones after reading a comment by Thomas Pynchon...
Very nice thread!!!
And I just loved the style of Cleo Brown, a very very good pianist! Certainly it became a favourite of mine.
The Bradley/McKinley orchestra is always a must for me. Slack was great! Like too his records with Ella Mae Morse.

Not so difficult to find turntables that will play OK these records. All those Garrards, BSRs, Thorens, etc, from 60s and 70s have the 78 speed - and have all condition to play well. And are good machines, indeed! (and cheap)
Sinatra too... A LP called "Only the Lonely". All his records from Capitol are marvelous, but this one have something special. (in fact I do not like a lot the Reprise records).
I'm around for a week, bot I think it's still time to write something about myself!
I live in São Paulo, Brazil. That's why my English is far from perfect, have a little patience with it (brazilian language is Portuguese).
I always had a big interest about 40s, because movies, music...
I do not see a brilliant future to filmmaking - in the Hollywood way. Of course we will have good films, made by those who like movies. But cheaper films, ever in 16mm. But where we can see actor's work, and not just computer work.
Movies need big money, and they always want the secure the...
Thanks a lot, Tom!!
When I came home with it, everybody asked me if I started to get junk in the street - or if I started to use something illegal...
But honestly, I had a lot of work, but it wasn't difficult. It's a very well made radio, you can easilly feel the care in every detail...
Maybe the problem (or happilly?) is that we just remember the good films. The most of production was (is?) pure junk for teenagers. Anyway, the best we cando is to see is to know what is good...
But to try to remember quickly the really good film from 1981 is hard!

Roadierfl and Kahuna, thanks a lot for the kindly words!!
Wood is tricky sometimes... And usually my radios had problems with termites. Usually I got them in deposits of old forniture. But it's funny to work slowly with them. I have much more trouble about the electronics.
Merry...

Completelly agree! 70s is a tragic period...
But there are a few exceptions about movies. "The Sting" is a great movie - and made people remember again Scott Joplin. Or some of the last films by John Houston.
But my heart is with noir films, so the 40s are my choice.

Fairbanks Morse
One of the radios I restored, a Fairbanks Morse. Never got much information about this manufacturer, and I never knew if the gabinet was produced in USA or in Brazil.
One of the most difficult forniture restorations. It had 7 different paintings over the wood. In its life...
Just saw again another day, and the theme is fantastic. The Third Man, music by Anton Karas. A fantastic cynical counterpoint to the story.

Martin
