The Era -- Day By Day

I'm not as flat out sympathetic to Lana's plight as I was a week ago. This two- fiancee dilemma seems to be open to a possible resolution. Which would leave Harold with Lillums with a ring on her finger. I don't equate that with winning the PowerBall, for some reason.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Knew so many like that. Not just WWII vets, but Nam vets just a few years older than myself. Learned much from them.

The Era -- Day By Day

I never recall Archie living out a scenario as dark as the one Harold is experiencing. I'd proffer that comparisons between the two comics is a stretch. Only thing "teen" about Harold in these features is his surname: he's clearly living a twenty something existence. Did he start out as a high...

The Era -- Day By Day

Talk about milking every negative stereotype for all that it's worth! Look, I get it that the undergrad experience changed a lot over the decades, but I don't think this was a real slice o' life even back in the day. What I remember most was studying for endless hours until my eyes burned, and...

Why does Annie always refer to or address Warbucks with the quotation marks? We get that he didn't actually sire the precocious and plucky little moppet, but isn't it time to presume a bit of familiarity?

The Era -- Day By Day

Perhaps I mentioned this before, but back when I was still in my later teens a local Chicago FM station would broadcast the "Lights Out" episodes under the title, "The Devil and Mr. O." I really enjoyed those shows. Bet that they'd still be popular if brought back. About the same time CBS Radio...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I could write a book on the subject. When the COVID shutdown first hit, grocery retailers in the area (including Costco and Trader Joe's) started special "senior hours" so that those of us 65 and older could shop, hopefully, in a less infection prone setting. We stopped availing ourselves to...

How does that goofy looking runt Shadow end up with a drop dead gorgeous rich girl?

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

When you retire to an area where you have no familiarity from prior trips it's very helpful. That first year we could barely find our way to Costco or Trader Joe's, and travelling across the city to find some obscure fabric store would be unthinkable without GPS. What we did discover is that...

You Know You're in Canada When...

Love Montreal. My wife treated me to a trip to that city for my 60th birthday. She had a tough time grasping why, but I insisted upon a trip to see Wilensky's Light Lunch. I'm a Mordecai Richler/ Duddy Kravitz fan, and she's not.

And Lana snags her engagement ring first. Tough luck, Lillums. "Prior in time is prior in right," and "Possession imparts constructive notice," right, Brother Harp?

Someone else - a contemporary of the strip, no less- saw Gray tacking in that direction too, huh? My guess is that he won't lay it on unions directly, but code it so that we'll all be in on the references. BTW...the LIU (which became the International Longshoreman Association) did have issues...

One final point: When I was a member, the corporate name was, "Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine." Now it's "Shriners of North America." That likely came to pass as a result of what you're referencing. Another sign of the times: there are rarely Shriner marching bands anymore...

The stock line is, "Little boys like to play Cowboys and Indians. Shriners like to play Muslims and Infidels."

I smell a not too thinly disguised jab at organized labor by Mr. Gray over the next hill. Hope that I'm wrong.

I actually was a member (Medinah, Chicago) for a few years in the 80's and 90's. I like the work that they do for kids in their orthopedic and burn treatment hospitals. The rest... not really for me. I'll leave it at that.

If I became a Shriner at least I'd have a tiny powered car for those parades.

Now here's a scary thought: evidently I'm eligible for membership in the American Legion. Two weeks of officer candidate school, and an honorable discharge because of a medical (high BP) issue (and a Form DD214 out there somewhere documenting same) apparently more than covers it. Are they THAT...

Love the mention of Paul H. Douglas. Quite an extraordinary man. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Maine, he did his undergrad work at Bowdoin College, then went on to earn his doctorate in economics (Columbia). Served on the faculties of the Universities of Illinois, Washington, and Chicago...
