You know you are getting old when:

I got it instantly, for whatever that’s worth. But we tend to riff around here, and generally find a way back to the topic of the thread. That’s what happened in this case. Your little joke mentioned milk that ain’t really milk and I ran with it and GHT and TikiTom brought it back to “you know...

You know you are getting old when:

My lovely missus prefers almond “milk.” I’ll never understand that. On those occasions when I do purchase honest-to-goodness comes-from-a-cow milk it’s of the nonfat variety. I got used to it and now whole milk is just too rich for me. And nonfat froths up more readily with the espresso...

You know you are getting old when:

I doubt I will ever set foot aboard an A380. They’ll remain in service for quite a number of years yet, I’d wager, but not on routes I’ll likely ever fly. My understanding is that Airbus was banking on the hub-and-spoke route system to be the A380’s stock in trade — carrying large numbers of...

You know you are getting old when:

As to E Types … I prefer the earlier versions, the ones without the flared wheel well openings. It’s a simpler, cleaner look. Over here in the colonies the car is more often than not referred to as the “XKE,” continuing the “XK” designations used on Jaguar’s earlier two-seater sports cars —...

You know you are getting old when:

The rollout of the first 747 was a BFD when I moved to Seattle, in 1968. That very aircraft, the first 747, is a permanent feature at the Museum of Flight adjacent to Boeing Field, aka King County Airport. The 747 has been a hit by any measure — more than half a century in production, and it’s...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I’d consider hunting down a vintage kitchen match dispenser because I like such things and I think one would look pretty cool on a little section of wall here. But I also like my utilitarian vintage stuff to be of true utility to me. Otherwise, it’s just for effect. Nothing wrong with that, I...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

The Old Man, who went the way of all things in 2015, referred to the refrigerator as “the icebox,” as did his parents and siblings. He didn’t predate the household electric refrigerator, but his folks did, and I imagine he had some firsthand experience of true iceboxes.

How far back does the Hufford line extend around there?

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I’m guessing it either has advertising or it’s decorated with a floral design. Just a few minutes ago I washed my glass sugar dispenser. They’re easy enough to find online, but you won’t likely find one in a restaurant anymore. Those little paper packets spelled the end of that.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I recall striking those “strike anywhere” matches on my blue jeans. I had a Zippo or two, but if they were overfilled the fluid gave me a rash on my right upper thigh, where my front pocket made contact. Once the disposable Bic lighter became ubiquitous, it was goodbye to matches and Zippos...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

On that note … I can’t recall when I last saw a wall-mounted kitchen match dispenser. The ones in my memory were made of sheet metal and carried advertising. I assume they were distributed free, the refrigerator magnets of their day.

    My Vintage Radio Collection

Old radios are much more visually compelling that almost but not quite all modern consumer electronics. The old stuff was a more substantial investment and was thought a more permanent household furnishing. People didn’t expect to be throwing them out in a few years, as we do now with our audio...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

When I moved to Colorado from the state o’ Washington it was a simple matter of presenting the people at the licensing place with my Washington license, peering into the eyesight testing thing, standing in front of the camera and giving ’em a few bucks. They punched a hole in WA DL, handed it...

    My Vintage Radio Collection

I, for one, quite appreciate your sharing your collection with us here. There must be scores (at least) of online “communities” of old radio collectors/restorers/etc., so I take it as a gift that you choose to post your work here.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

The problem, I think, isn’t that people don’t know the rules of the road; rather, it’s just that they too often disregard them. And it’s not that those less-careful drivers are incapable, either. I‘d bet that the overwhelming majority of them would pass a road test, and then go back to their...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

^^^^^^ I’m not a slow driver, but I observe the rules of the road and know when I do and do not have the right of way. Further, self-preservation has me ever mindful that not every driver shares that awareness. I steer clear of what I call “competitive drivers.” I’m not particularly conflict...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

^^^^^ “Corner store” seems as fitting as anything. There was one across from my junior high school. They sold lots of candy and soda pop. I’m just now recalling that an acquaintance, a friend of sorts, lived in a space that had once been a corner store. But that’s been more than 40 years ago...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

^^^^^ I can’t think of a specific term for those little mom-and-pop stores that were still much in evidence in my early years. They’re all but nonexistent now, although in some older neighborhoods the structures still stand and have been converted to other uses. I can think of a couple of them...
