So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I suspect that in most cases narcissism is a cover for self-loathing. I don’t know who coined the phrase “every accusation is a confession,” but I find a lot of truth in it among some people I have the misfortune of knowing.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

It’s no great revelation that some people obviously enjoy being jerks (there are stronger and more descriptive terms, but this is a more or less family-friendly forum, so “jerk” it is). But it still grates when said jerk is a person you can’t quite be entirely rid of. I suppose we all know the...

It’s not just in show biz, either. The behaviors we might find cute or charming or entertaining in younger people (men especially) are considerably less so in those over 40. I was quite the barfly in my 20s and well into my 30s. I have few regrets. It was mostly a good time. I never lost a job...

^^^^^^^ The less I keep score, the greater my satisfaction. I’d be less than honest if I denied wanting recognition and reward. Both our spirits and our bellies need feeding. But there will always be someone “better.” So watch what that someone does and get better yourself.

^^^^^^ Please don’t conflate. It’s not to stifle ambition. That any person can “do anything he sets his mind to” is utter nonsense, and a kid who actually believes it is being set up for frustration and disappointment. It’s fortunate that few kids actually believe it. Far better than...

“You can do anything you set your mind to.” Gawd, but I so hated hearing that BS when I was a kid. It was insulting, really.

I hesitate to read Henry Bushkin’s biography of Johnny Carson, because it seems a violation of a largely unspoken code. “Bombastic Buskin” was Carson’s lawyer and friend (of sorts) for several years. Bushkin’s “warts and all” account of his former client amounts to capitalizing on that...

^^^^^^ Carson often took days off and the show filled his seat with guest hosts, especially in the later years of his tenure, when the show was cut to 60 minutes from 90 and his work week to three shows. Our TV offerings were far fewer then. I doubt any of our more recent talk show hosts will...

It would seem that popular music (and other entertainments) most appeal to a younger audience. Most people prefer the pop from their earlier years. I recall telling a younger fellow, a fan of “classic rock” (a somewhat oxymoronic phrase) that was current decades before he was born, that most...

You know you are getting old when:

I know the names of a couple-three late night talk show hosts, but others came and went without ever entering my consciousness. Most Americans over age 50 or so would say “Johnny Carson” when asked to name the archetypal talk show host. He left his gig more than 30 years ago and has been dead...

    Income Tax Time Again

I’ve used CPAs for, geez, going on 30 years now. The first died. The second was a friend and associate of the first who was entrusted with his files so I went with him for a few years until he acquired much bigger accounts than mine to keep him busy so he handed me off to a third who did a...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Gossiping was a favorite pastime among the grownups in my extended family back when I was a kid. There’s little doubt in my mind that a couple remaining childless more than two or three years into their marriage would have been the subject of a whispering campaign. (More like stage whispering...

Gotta wonder if old Victoria was telling more than she knew. I knew too well a person who seemed incapable of NOT attempting to control social situations and the others involved because he was often incapable of controlling himself. Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil, et cetera.
