"Mad Men" on AMC (US) - (Spoilers Within)

I think I liked it, but with all Mad Men, I'm going to have to think about it a while. I just wish we could know what happened to Ginsburg...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Sometimes vintage style just IS.. There are people you can't imagine not in vintage style because it becomes part of them, part of their personality. Probably if you changed your hair to s totally modern style that doesn't fit your personality, THEN they'd say something!:)

    Lost art of proper relaxation

There were, of course, certain undergarments that did not allow for slouching, no matter how much one may have wanted to slouch'

    Lost art of proper relaxation

My grandfather was something of a couch sprawler (born 1901). He had a black Naugahyde sofa by the fireplace with a little table that held his smoking and reading gear. No one sat on his couch unless expressly invited. My grandmother sat on the other couch by a lamp and NEVER sprawled or did...

    Pedicures?

Between stockings and closed-toe shoes, there wasn't much call for pedicures. The only concern was keeping toenails short and smooth so as to not snag expensive stockings!

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Customer service in general is gone, it seems. Sadly, a great experience somewhere is so rare that when I am treated well at a business, it really stands out. Weirdly, I had some fantastic customer service at a Sonic! Who'da thougt? Yet go to a restaurant and pay up to 10 times as much and...

    Cute Vintage-y Shoes

I have to give a big vote for Aerosoles! They have some great vintage styles at good prices, and they are very comfy. I got Minor Sole in navy fabric and Arithmatc in both red and black leather. I'm in love with them all...

"our Zoo" - BBC TV programme about a zoo in the late 1920s/early 1930s

I actually came here looking to start this very conversation. I enjoyed the show... Very sweet. But I LOVED THE CLOTHES both men's and, of course, the women's. I went looking for stills from the show so I could study the more closely, but have had no real luck. Anyone?

do you wash your hair everyday?

I've never washed my hair daily and my daughters don't either. I wash it when it's dirty, and that depends on the temperature and what I've been up to. A good shower cap has always been a must for me.

    Have you found Hidden Treasure?

I bought an old leather-bound Spanish bible at a library book sale for a dollar. Flipping through it, I found several religion related newspaper clippings. Then, I turned a page and there was an Elvis Presley autograph. I stopped breathing! Since I frequent thrift stores and estate sales I often...

Anyone else interested in trying out ration dieting?

Lolly, the cheese wheels look good and certainly nutritious! We don't do marmite over here, though... Anyone have a substitute for marmite (that doesn't taste anything like marmite ;)

Anyone else interested in trying out ration dieting?

Salad cream is kind of sweet to me. I once made an Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk recipe for "mayonnaise" and while I thought it was disgusting, my Irish husband thought it tasted just like the Heinz salad cream he grew up with. I'll have to find that recipe again in one of my old...

Anyone else interested in trying out ration dieting?

That would be fun to share real ration recipes. How about we post recipes that we have tried, and that way we can discuss any substitutes for modern times. And, of corse, how successfully the recipe turns out and how it tastes. Anyone game? Only real ration recipes, with source?

    Jack London

JL stories fall into a few main categories: the North Pacific, the South Pacific, California, and then the "others". They were typically published in collections, so it's always interesting to look at how he packaged them up, but certainly they can all stand alone. JL can be problematic. He is...

    Jack London

Oh! I can talk about JL ad nauseum as he was one of my main focuses in grad school. As far as recommended reading, the short stories are the best("Samuel" is my particular favorite). But Before Adam is a great book. My favorite of his novels, though, is The Star Rover. I loved teaching that to...
