What's the quality difference between 5X and 6X beaver in new (i.e. HatCo) Stetson westerns? Do you guys like either or both felts? Are they less papery feeling than HatCo Royale quality dress hats? I'm thinking of trying a Pawnee, Carson, Dune, Catera, or the like.
Borsalino runs small right? So if I'm a 59 or 7 3/8 in Stetson, Biltmore, Beaver, Guerra, etc. does that make me a 60 in Borsalino? Same size vintage vs new?
When I was able to visit DelMonico in New Haven five years ago I was a size larger I'm pretty sure.
Just got my little steamer out for fall and successfully reshaped my only vintage western. What would it take to get a leather band on it? No hatters I know of near me in DC. The ribbon is stained and tattered.
Also, can I do anything to make the brim less stiff? I'm reluctant to bend it too...

This hat is sold. Thanks everyone!
Made in the US and pretty much in like new condition. The only wear is slight rubbing of the lettering on the sides of the sweatband. The color is a rich medium brown and the rabbit fur felt is standard weight. The bound curled brim is 1 7/8"...

I'm selling my Optimo "Mitchum", size 60cm (7 1/2) in emerald green.
I've kept this hat in the original Optimo box since I got it a few years ago because I started wearing my hair shorter and that has me more solidly wearing a 59 in just about everything. I don't want to get into...
New hats, new thread: I used my birthday as an excuse to order three hats from Michael Gannon in the past month. I got a rabbit in sahara and later ordered beavers in sage and steel. The steel beaver was a custom order with an open crown and 2 3/4" brim. The other two have 2 1/2" brims and...
Don't be shy about spending real hat money on a proper hat. Two things that in broad terms denote quality beyond the cheap stuff you're used to: first, any quality hat will come in sizes (e.g. 7 3/8 or 59cm) so find out your size and don't buy anything that comes in small medium and large...
Amazon has Prime shipping with free returns on some Stetsons now, good for trying stuff without the risk and expense of return shipping costs.
I've never been to Italy but I'd recommend going without a fedora on your head and coming back with one for sure. Maybe two.
That's good to know, but having these three modern Stetsons in front of me together makes the flimsy ones seem like costume props or something. That's maybe putting it too strongly but still. Do you have a modern Whippet or have you handled one? I want to to like it, I just want it to hold up...
Thanks guys. I could tell the Strat felt was lacking - there are some other underwhelming details as well.
Honestly, this now has me wondering about the Whippet, whose felt is nearly as papery thin feeling as the Strat despite saying Sovereign on the sweatband. Maybe Royal Deluxe / Sovereign...
Anybody else own a new Stratoliner (the low-end Royal model)? Do they hold up okay?
I just bought a new Strat in caribou and, while I like the style, it seems quite flimsy compared to my other hats. I actually ordered three new Stetsons at once and I'm deciding which to keep:
Chatham (Royal...
JJ and Pork Pie were both good visits the one time I went. I preferred the hats at JJ but same owner and knowledgeable, helpful staff.
My best shopping experience was at DelMonico Hatters in New Haven, where Jeff Dyer took care of me.
