What's the quality difference between 5X and 6X beaver in new (i.e. HatCo) Stetson westerns? Do you guys like either or both felts? Are they less papery feeling than HatCo Royale quality dress hats? I'm thinking of trying a Pawnee, Carson, Dune, Catera, or the like. -

Borsalino runs small right? So if I'm a 59 or 7 3/8 in Stetson, Biltmore, Beaver, Guerra, etc. does that make me a 60 in Borsalino? Same size vintage vs new? When I was able to visit DelMonico in New Haven five years ago I was a size larger I'm pretty sure. -

Western, anyone?
Just got my little steamer out for fall and successfully reshaped my only vintage western. What would it take to get a leather band on it? No hatters I know of near me in DC. The ribbon is stained and tattered. Also, can I do anything to make the brim less stiff? I'm reluctant to bend it too... -

Don't be shy about spending real hat money on a proper hat. Two things that in broad terms denote quality beyond the cheap stuff you're used to: first, any quality hat will come in sizes (e.g. 7 3/8 or 59cm) so find out your size and don't buy anything that comes in small medium and large... -

Newbie Hat Experience
Amazon has Prime shipping with free returns on some Stetsons now, good for trying stuff without the risk and expense of return shipping costs. I've never been to Italy but I'd recommend going without a fedora on your head and coming back with one for sure. Maybe two. -

JJ Hat Center & Pork Pie Hatters NYC
JJ and Pork Pie were both good visits the one time I went. I preferred the hats at JJ but same owner and knowledgeable, helpful staff. My best shopping experience was at DelMonico Hatters in New Haven, where Jeff Dyer took care of me.
