I think fundamentally you can expect horsehide to 'break in' but not 'shrink to fit'. Your expectations seem a little high.

your connection of cowhide and color makes zero sense as any leather can be dyed the brown you want.
tenjin only makes cowhide

If you are going to spend 4k, do some research.
If you like grain or quality leatherworking in general check out this Japanese brand Wild Swans. They seem pretty popular there. This one is an ink dyed Moo Deng.
They also do some sketchy stuff like elephant, but as far as I'm concerned hippos are dicks and not endangered so they're fair game lol.
