I mainly use 95% denatured alcohol for desolving the Super Blonds shellac flakes and spraying the felts after pouncing to even out the color, it also stiffens up the felt and since it is 95% I don't use flame on the felts after spraying.
Does anyone use the denatured 95% alcohol to flame the...
When you use fire on your felts, keep a damp lint free towel close by and just toss it over your hat to smoother the flames, the last time that I used fire on a felt I used rubbing alcohol, it doesn't burn as long but it does work for the lose fibers.
I have had a simular problem and I put the felt back on the block, then soaked the hat brim with hot water, then used my steam iron on the felt, I ironed the felt the same way that I do when I first block a felt, after the felt had completely dried, I needed to apply some shellac because the...
I recently had an issue with a chocolate brown rabbit fur felt, there was a soft spot in the brim close to the bottom of the crown, I wet the brim in that area and then used a steam iron on the soft spot and the area of the brim that I wet, roughly one third of the brim, then let the brim dry...
I use Super Blonde shellac flacks that I purchased from a store on Etsy and 95% denatured alcohol that I buy on Amazon, I desolve the flakes in about 16 ounces of the alcohol then apply it with a paint brush, you could also put it in a spray bottle and spray the brim, however with spray, wear a...

Thank you Randy,
The little lady is looking forward to getting her hat and so am I. She wanted a hat band 1/2" wide and I made the mistake of telling her that the Burgandy ribbon was 9/16", that is when she told me that she wanted 1/2" wide ribbon, it took a little talking but I pointed out...
Well I took some photos of my first hat for a young lady today outside since we actually have some natural sunlight, I wanted to see if it would help with my photos. I have been using a white sheet and several lights in my living room for my photos, sunlight seems to be the cure, however I am...
Hi Randy,
Thank you for the introduction of Busted Hats. Randy and I worked together covering every detail of the hat that he wanted me to make for him. Randy sent me photos of the hat that he wanted me to make which was a big help and a little bit of a challenge, the challenge was a welcomed...
I am working on two felts right now that I am making for women, both felts are 160G smooth felts, one felt is a bottle green and that felt is so soft, I don't think that it has very much shellac in it at all, I blocked it on a 58cm block, I put the hat and block up on a shelf and the brim just...
I have never used a palm sander pouncing the felts, I use the fine grit sandpapers and sand by hand. A palm sander will remove felt fibers real fast and if you work to much in spots you might develope flat spots in the felt or get down to the shellac PDQ. I did try a sanding block one time and...
When I do any pouncing work on my hat felt bodies, I start out with 400 or 600 grit, then use 800 and the final pouncing is with 1,000 grit. If you use a course grit you will pounce the felt right dow to the shellac and that creates some nice shinny mottling. Since you have been using the course...

I will check with Clint and see when he might be able to get a block made for me. The other problem is the flange. This hat has a 3" wide brim, but the snap works perfectly. By the way what color felt would you want for this style hat? I only have rabbit felts on hand, one of these days I will...
