This morning my Melton "Art In Hats" caught my eye so I tossed it on before I headed out for a few errands on this Friday morning. Don't see a lot about this hatmaker despite them being around since 1934. Seems like a pretty solid hat to me.

Okay some days it is handy to have a couple of straws in the arsenal.
Can anyone tell me what material this is made of? It is hemp? My favorite color and texture for straws.

Hard to tell from the pic, David but it has the appearance of 'genuine Milan' which is braided wheat straw as I understand it. That golden wheat color has often been copied with hemp and synthetics but they're usually labeled as such.

Three day weekend and a spur of the moment trip to Nara. We booked a slightly out of the way hotel. Cheap, but quite a large room. Took some beer and wine along and bought dinner at the supermarket to eat in our room. Enjoyed a couple of dips in the jacuzzi on the balcony, and took a wander around the kofun (ancient tomb) near the hotel.
Today’s hat was the Akubra Range for me. The big brim provided perfect coverage for this weather.
Etsuko chose a Tula.
In the background, you can see kofun. The tombs of “important” people in this part of Japan were islands in the shape of a keyhole. Here’s the Google Maps view.

Oh, and Nathan will be pleased to see me in shorts.

That’s what I’m talking about Gary - great look with the wide brim and the shorts! Love that belt, too.
Fascinating burial traditions in that area. Those keyhole-shaped island tombs sure put the fancy-pants traditional Chinese tombs to shame - how many of those are there? Those are human made islands or were they extant islands that were made to take that shape? Either way, not an easy thing to do!
I’m going to have to do some research this weekend - thanks for sharing that and as always you both look lovely!

Thanks, Mark! It’s a cheap 1960s Bond hat and I’ve seen a lot of similar hats over the year but it does the job.

An old parabuntal body in its original bamboo packaging that was blocked and finished in plantation style by Optimo c.2013. A very lightweight hat to wear in the heat.

Nathan, I believe the tombs are man made islands. The most famous examples can be found in Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture. They were registered as a World Heritage Site a few years back.
