Knox Young New Yorkers - young man's Vagabond style. Thanks to Brad Bowers for the advertisement research - 1937-38. Simple depression era hat with very nice felt - weighs 2.5 ounces. 5 1/4" crown, 2 1/8" brim. Very little wear. No manufacturing tags that I could find in a quick look. More after I clean it up a bit.

Personally I would have thought that hat was much older. Seems like a pre-merger (HCA) hat to me. Oh and you can thank eBay for screwing up my account and causing my sniping service to fail, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the hat so cheaply.

I appreciate the failure. I like to get a good deal every once in a while. ;^)

The elements (sweatband, construction) are very consistent with later 1930s lightweight cruising hats... vagabond, cross country, playboy, gadabout... etc. I think Brad's advertisements are right on the money.

Spent some time with the young Knox today, cleaning, steaming, blocking and creasing. I did a careful search behind the sweatband to find the manufacturing label and a price tag - likely purchased on sale at Gimbels.

Beautiful Knox, Alan! Thanks to the additional photos, looks like I can update my website to note that the transition label shows up at least around '37 or '38. I had speculated as much on the dating guide, but had nothing concrete. This is much better evidence to that end.

Very nice, Alan. I trust you have your Tom n' Jerry recipe ready for hat wearing beside the fire tonight?

6 eggs, separated and room temperature
2 1/4 cups superfine sugar, divided
Salt to taste (just a small pinch)
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup powdered milk
Boiling water
Rum, brandy, or whiskey (your choice)
Nutmeg
