"I'm 30 years older than you, I've had my back broke once and my hip twice. And on my worst day I could beat the hell out of you."--
The Cowboys 1972

“Now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all… your fault, my fault, nobody’s fault… it don’t matter…I’m gonna blow your head off. It’s as simple as that.” – Big Jake 1971

(As Fain lies dying after being shot by McCandles)
John Fain:
Who are you?
Jake:
Jacob McCandles.
John Fain:
I thought you were dead.
Jake:
Not hardly. – Big Jake 1971

Richard Boone as Fain. All the rest, of course, delivered by John Wayne.

"Death is such a primitive concept. I prefer to think of them as battling evil in another dimension." Grig, The Last Starfighter

As Bill Murray, shot by Columbus, lies dying

Tallahassee: You think you might pull through?

Bill Murray: No.

Columbus: If it means anything now, I am so sorry. It was just instinctive.

Bill Murray: It was my bad. I was never a very good practical joker.

Little Rock: So do you have any regrets?

Bill Murray: (Slight pause) "Garfield," maybe.

Zombieland 2009

U.S. Marshal Joe Belle: Do you know who I am?

Tom Horn: No.

U.S. Marshal Joe Belle: What you were in the Southwest, I was in the Northwest.

Tom Horn: I was mostly out of work.

Eve Kendall: It’s going to be a long night.
Roger Thornhill: True.
Eve Kendall: And I don’t particularly like the book I’ve started.
Roger Thornhill: Ah.
Eve Kendall: You know what I mean?
Roger Thornhill: Ah, let me think. Yes, I know exactly what you mean.

If memory serves, the subtext is clear, but at least on the surface, they give the impression to the movie audience that nothing happened which I remember thinking undermined the sophistication of a very sophisticated movie. In "To Catch a Thief," it is a bit more grey, but they give the impression (almost) that Carry and Grace enjoy each other's company when the camera pans to the fireworks.

I'm not an advocate of the gratuitous and salacious sex that permeates our movie and TV culture today (but would defend their legal and moral right to do so), but as a natural part of a story - believable and reflecting the way adults live - it belongs in movies and TV. One of the great thing about pre-code movies is not only that sex, premarital sex, abortion, etc. is part of the story, but - in most cases - it is handled honestly (it happens, people deal with it and move on with their lives), but not graphically over the top. Once the code started to be enforced, many movies lost a verisimilitude and relevance because audience knew they were being patronized and that real life didn't work that way.

I'll repeat one I posted in "Terms Which Have Disappeared". From "The Thin Man":

Nora: "They say your were shot twice in the tabloids!"
Nick" "It's a lie. He never came anywhere near my tabloids."
