You know you are getting old when:

I don't know how they do it in multiplexes, but in our place, there is no "thermostat" to adjust. The HVAC system is controlled by a complex computer control module that regulates not just temperature but also outside air intake and internal CO2 concentration by controlling dampers, air-circulation fans, heat, and cooling. It's impossible to control the specific temperature at any given specific point in such a large open space -- so the regulation is based on the air as it is sucked into the return-air intake, not how it feels at any one seat.

In short, if somebody tells me they're too cold or too warm, all I can do is tell them to try a different seat.

THe biggest issue I have to deal with is not the temperature in the theatre, but the temperature in the projection booth. The digital projection system we installed several years ago vents its exhaust -- from a 2000 watt xenon arc lamp -- directly into the booth. And the projector will shut itself down for safety reasons (so that lamp doesn't, you know, explode and kill me) if the booth temperature exceeds 90 degrees. So we have to run a special auxiliary AC system in the booth at 64 degrees, year round, just to keep the equipment from failure. I have had to painstakingly explain this to executive bean counters who don't understand what possible reason there is for running an AC system in the dead of a Maine winter, but my life depends on it, so I run it.

My final career iteration was as a site tech for an engineering company specializing in indoor air quality. In my experience one of the most thankless jobs is that of a building operator. By far the most expressed complaint from tenants is the temp issue. We were brought in to consult and to fix the unfixable. I have walked away from an inspection, leaving two women in a bitter argument. One lady too hot the other of course too cold both ready to fight to the death for their position. And yes much of the issue is related to location. If you are seated in the jet stream of either the heating or the AC your comfort level will be different from someone seated just a few feet away. And to complicate it my equipment would register the same temp in both areas.

My most frequent advice, although I told them if they quoted me I would deny having ever said the words......block the ceiling register or redirect it with a strategically placed file folder duct taped to the ceiling.

It gets even more scary when some charming young man or delightful young lady smiles and says hello to you when you're out shopping. Eventually you realise that yesterday they were the neighbour's small child and today they are all grown up. What happened?

True story: I have a very close friend who is now a respected professor at a well known university. One day he’s walking around campus and his eyes linger perhaps too long on a shapely young undergrad student. She catches his eye and starts to come toward him. He thinks: “oh my gosh, I’m totally busted and am about to get a politically correct tongue lashing.” Instead what he hears is even worse. She says “Professor XYZ, did you recognize me? I used to live next door to you. You and your wife used to baby sit me when I was two years old!” Ugh, thinks he, just shoot me.

Not sure I am allowed to ask this question, but here goes......do women with large silicone implants pose a danger to crematoriums?
The image that conjures up!

It's easy done but at least the linger was nothing more than that. I can empathise with the guy's embarrassment.

A story told by our former Electrical Engineering Dept. chairman goes as follows:
Some years ago, when it wasn't so strictly taboo to touch or be touched by a student, a girl came up after class on the first day and hugged him and said she knew she would enjoy being in his class since he reminded her so much of her grandfather.

Ouch... Over on the "How do people react to your hat wearing?" thread, I once posted the following... That a young woman once commented to me: "Love the hat! Love the look! If I was an old lady I would be so into you!" She meant it as a complement, I'm sure. :(

Medical prosthetics are usually removed during the embalming/body preparation process for cremation. Metal and plastic parts are usually removed for cremation, but if the person is being buried, they are usually left in place.

Now you know

I did not realize there was any prep required for cremation....just thought it was placing the cadaver in the cardboard box and slide it in the oven.

So it appears I was wrong and misinterpreted what my friend had said to me before. A quick Google search set me straight:

"Certain implants, like pacemakers, are always removed before cremation - since pacemakers can explode in the extreme heat and cause damage and injury to crematory employees - breast implants require no such removal"

Paying by cash rather than using your card is often quoted as a sign of getting old. Age has nothing to do with it, paying cash avoids being profiled and for good measure I avoid loyalty cards for the same reason. As Lizzie once so perceptively opined: Profiling makes you the product.

I did not stick around long enough to be offended by the overt sexuality of the Super Bowl halftime show. I turned it off after 2 minutes of the horrid music.....missed all the flesh, shake and shimmy...…..and didn't feel badly that I missed that either.

I saw the show on TouYoub & though I am always open to a little titillation I found the sight of a couple of fat thighed, middle aged women, squeezed into contention tights & thrusting their crotches at the camera(s) a real passion killer. Thankyou who ? Thankyou Pepsi.
The music sucked but the dancers were terrific.
