When I was a kid in the UK, my parents used to make ginger beer and it was fantastic. They had a big old jar with ginger root, yeast and water - lots of fermenting going on.

I'm thinking of trying myself, I found this "How To"

Because the fermentation is very fast, there is a lot of CO2 produced (we want our ginger beer to be nice and fizzy) but not much alcohol - less than 1% ABV. If I remember correctly, anything less than 2% alcohol has classed as a soft drink.

So far, I'm still looking for the perfect commercially made soft drink.

I love Fentiman's ginger beer and ... :(

HI Missy

I bought a 4 pack of the Reed's Original Ginger Beer and HATED IT. I love Vernor's Ginger ale, and Canada Dry Ginger Ale is drinkable (but pales in comparison to Vernor's). I have three Reed's Originals left and a 4 pack of their Cherry Ginger Beer that I'm half scared to try. The Reed's had a funny smell to it or something. I tried putting a little Captain Morgan's in the last quarter bottle (Dark and Stormy), but that didn't help much either.

Have you tried Reed's? Did I buy the worst possible brand of Ginger Beer or do I just not like Ginger Beer? Considering how much I actually like Ginger ale, I would find that odd.

I absolutely hate vermouth, both sweet and dry, which means I also hate Martinis, so my tastes aren't completely vintage...

Thanks

I don't think I have had Reed's, but I don't think it would be odd that you like ginger ale and not ginger beer. They are very different flavors. Most ginger ale I have tasted barely tastes of ginger at all, while good ginger beer has that fantastic bite to it.

Thanks Yeps. The Reed's didn't in my opinion, have a ginger bite so much as a kind of skanky after taste. Maybe it was bad?

I am not sure I have ever heard skanky applied to soda. Now I am imagining this ginger beer wearing heavy makeup and revealing clothes.

Maybe Reed's just isn't good. I hope someone else can tell.

Coke In Bottles!!! Coke is the one for me! Unfortunately I really can't drink much soda these days but I love the Americana associated with Coke! I've got a few of those old wood Coke crates and a few old Coke trays set out iin the kitchen.

Hi

I finally had the guts to try the Reed's Cherry Ginger Beer. It isn't nearly as bad as the Original was. It had a Ginger after taste / smell to it, but tasted like Cherry Cool aide (more or less). I won't buy it again, but I'll drink the rest of it at least.

I love Fentiman's ginger beer and their dandelion and burdock, too. But my very favourite drink at the moment is Barr's cream soda with raspberry which (as a fan of the Roald Dahl book The BFG) I refer to as 'frobscottle' as it is so very yummy... The bubbles don't fizz downwards though :(

Barr's Cream Soda with Raspberry is an excellent drink. Top marks!

I'm gonna need to cast my vote for jolt cola. They have more flavors than just regular cola but I'm still partial to just the good ole cola. It's increasingly harder to find now tho and that makes me pretty darn sad. That and they don't do the bottles like when they started out.

That's a shame for no more glass bottles. One thing is that some sodas are bottled at different bottling plants around the country and even out of the country. Sometimes one bottler will keep the glass bottles going.

How many here like to have "floats" like a Root Beer Float?

I have had the chance to bring Hire's Root Beer and Hagen-Das Vanilla ice cream over to friends for dessert on a hot day. Every one goes, "Wow I haven't had a Root Beer Float in ages!"

I love floats! I make them for my kids as special treats and they love them too!

Hi John

I can't possibly ever drink a float again. When I was very young (under 8), I drank a Pepsi and Vanilla ice cream float just minutes before it was obvious that I had either food poisoning or the flu. After you've tossed something, you don't want it ever again...
