Wool for WWII knitting

Hello

I'd like to try some WWII knitting according to one of these leaflets: http://www.fab40s.co.uk/Services1.html
I've just bought one on ebay.
I was thinking about a vest for a serviceman (hehe, for my serviceman). Do you have any idea which wool will be the best for it?
I am not from Britain, so, I am a bit confused about what the 4ply wool is, etc.
I'll do appreciate if anybody recommends me some online shop or some wool on ebay.

I typically use sock weight or fingering weight yarn. All of the vintage patterns I've used list a gauge, so just make sure to do a gauge swatch.
