In america we refer to as an officer in the police as a police officer, patrolman ,patrol officer, or constable and is the equivlent of a private through a corporal in the military. That is also similar to the british rank and file since our police our modeled after the Brits. The ones with the silver badges are patrolman or privates through corporals and the ones with gold badges with white straps are sergants and above. guess officer is used very loosley and can be used as a term for two different ranks.

Contratulations for your lucky bid.

That hat is the ordinary carabinieri's hat. It's not used by the officers. The officers have a sliver eagle on the hat, not a flame. The higher rank officers has a dark red hat with a golden eagle.

P.S. Don't wear that hat in Italy if you ever come here. It's considered illegal to wear current military dress.

Hi Riccardo,

I found your old posts a few weeks ago, and I want to thank you for the suggestion on "Cappelleria Melegari". I was there 2 weeks ago. Nice hats shop.

I think we are the only two Italians here...

Actually, there's a Lounger who uses the screen name ITALIANWISEGUY who did some posts on military hats a while back, but haven't heard from him lately. Here's the thread he started:http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=12011

Riccardo , you are probably the best one here on the lounge to know this . How many independent hat stores are left in Italy ? When I was there two weeks ago , I was told that most of the stores were owned by Borsalino themselves . I know of Melgari in Milan . It's been there for 90 years . I haven't seen another independent store in a while . I know that all of the Barbisio stores are now closed.

Ok,
only one hat store in my town (120.000 people) this hat store is 20/25 square meters, few hat, bad service...just for information!
A good store in Venice (giuliana longo) some good stores in Rome; some hat makers in Montappone AP.
Definitely:there isn't here a lot of hat stores!!
Take a search on google here is the keyword "cappellificio".
Let's ask to dzacca some information about Giuliana Longo hat store!

Best regards.
Riccardo.

Actually I never went to Giuliana Longo's store. I read a few review on the net but I never went there. Venice is not a place where you can go if you have little time. Sooner or later I'll be in Venice because I need to go to my ex-college to retrive a few documents, so I hope I'll be able to go to Longo's store, if so I'll let you know.
