~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just watched this noir this morning with Little Egghead (see photo at left) and came out quite impressed. Anne Sheridan does a fine job as a disaffected wife with no children in San Francisco. She does not care much for her husband who sees a murder and then runs and hides as the murderer has seen him. The police try to get her to help them find her husband but she is quite ambivalent about him in general - and the actress portrays this emotion very well. The newspapermen are hounding her, smelling a juicy story. To make things worse, her husband has a heart condition and needs ampules from his doctor, and the police have told all the doctors and pharmacists in San Francisco to REFUSE to give anyone such ampules. They want the husband to turn himself in, because the murderer he saw is a wanted killer and gangster. Many fine, fine shots of San Francisco and a horrific roller coaster ride at the end. Tons and tons of fedoras throughout, some good overcoats and a notably nice silk scarf on Sheridan.
Has anyone seen this little gem?
Ahhh, Ann Sheridan...my world hasn't been the same since I saw They Drive by Night 5 years ago. This sounds like another good one.
Film Forum here in NYC ran a "B Noir" festival some months back, and WOMAN ON THE RUN was almost universally touted as the highlight of the entire festival. My wife and I loved it.
It's available for a very affordable download, paired with another entertaining noir called CAUSE FOR ALARM, at www.eztakes.com.
Both those films plus 48 other old crime type films, mostly film noirs, are available in a boxed set that one can get on Amazon. It's called DARK CRIMES. The transfers are sub-optimal but watchable. I got the whole set for about $20. Very worth it, especially for rainy days, hungover mornings, etc.
