Morey's Piers' new $3 million haunted dark ride, Ghost Ship, on Mariner's Landing in Wildwoodm is based on the Philadelphia Experiment, a conspiracy theory that goes something like this: On Oct. 28, 1943, a U.S. destroyer escort was made invisible and teleported from Philly to Norfolk, Va., and back. The newly invisible sailors went mad, the legend goes. At the very least, they lodged themselves in Morey's imagination.

This thread could use a whole lot of background for those unfamiliar with Wildwood, NJ. Wildwood itself is a vintage treasure with some kitschy post-war motels that survived the condo lust of the 1990s.

Ah that takes me back, most people may recall that it is often populated by Coast Guard boots on their liberty day... I myself was one of them not too long ago, I love Wildwood. I need to go back there for some Vintage fun in the Sun.

Wildwood Memories

Since I grew up in Northeastern PA, we vacationed in Wildwood pretty darn often. And in college, it was a weekend destination every single weekend once the weather got warm. Some weekends, we would go without a room and just hope we would meet someone who would allow us to crash in their room. SUCH good times. After college ended in 1994, I moved to New England but thought about all my fun weekends at the Jersey Shore and was always spinning tales about the good times. So, two years ago my wife surprised me with a room right off the boardwalk and dear Lord did we have a blast. The first hour or so in town she couldn't believe how 'lame' the plastic palm trees, Doo Wop and Tiki Themes were. She kept saying "It is the 21st century, and this is Jersey. NOT 1950 and NOT the South Pacific!" Within the next hour she was head over heals in love with the place. I knew I had her hooked when we took a break from the boardwalk to go back to our motel (yes, motel) balcony to do shots like 19 year old kids.

We've traveled the world together and she will be the first to say that Wildwood is one of her favorite places!

What a great story!
I have all my memories of Wildwood in the early 1970s, of King Kong, Hunt's Pier, Dracula's Castle. We always stayed in the kitschy hotels like the Safari, Caribbean, and the Lollipop.
