Blues and boogie piano legend "Pinetop Perkins" and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley. Show great but food overpriced and decidedly mediocre. Note to self: just book for shows from now on.

Stewie Wonder

Went to see Stevie Wonder last night in Copenhagen.
Booooorrriiiiinnnggggggg...you just can not play Take Five on harmonica, Mr. Wonder.
He is over the hill IMO.
We left after the fifth number.
Only positive thing was, that we got the tickets for free.
If I get the choice next time between Stevie Wonder and watching a newly painted chair dry, I am not in doubt.
The chair wins!

Not exactly 'just,' but the last group I saw live worth mentioning in the FL would be a group from Halifax named 'Gypsophilia.' I caught them by chance while wandering through Sunfest two weeks ago. Some fun Manouche-y jazz, as well as Klezmerized little ditties and nifty funk numbers.
I was pretty annoyed to find out afterwards that I missed seeing Bria Skonberg's band play the day before. Guess that'll teach me not to only pay attention to the headliner posters...

In the last few weeks I've seen Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks (they'll be featured in the upcoming HBO series "Boardwalk Empire") and a couple of great new local bands, Grandpa Musselman and his Syncopators, a 20's Louis Armstrong cover band, and the Lower East Side Hot Club, a great Django Reinhardt inspired group. Both absolutely sensational.
People: Whether is somebody famous, or just some up and coming local group, SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!!!

Mickey Rooney!!!

By 11 o'clock I will have just seen the one and only Mickey Rooney, live and in person, at Feinstein's at the Loew's Regency, in Manhattan.
Yes, he's still alive! He'll be 90 on Tuesday or Wednesday. He's performing with his wife, who is . . . ahhemmm . . . several decades younger than him, so I expect to see more of her than of him. But if I get 20 minutes of Mickey during the evening I'll be pleased.
He was the top box office star in Hollywood 70 years ago!

the Hoodoo Gurus!

Great raucous rock band. They were headlining Saturday night's entertainment at the annual Wine Festival. I don't own any of their albums but they've had enough hits on local radio here in Oz that I knew most of the setlist. Took the kids along and a great time was had.

Just got back from Mickey Rooney. Wow! What an experience. The man is gonna be 90 on Thursday, and he can still entertain the heck out of an audience. He sang, cracked jokes, "danced", and shared the stage with his wife of 32 years, Jan. Yes, his 8th marriage was the one that lasted.
In the audience, which was about 140 people, were Regis Philbin, Matthew Broderick, Victor Garber, Donald Trump and Nathan Lane. A true once in a lifetime experience.
