So I'm sure this has been discussed here before... but I have never been good with forum search engines.

Regardless... I've been trying to build a good early 20th century set of adventure gear, and I've planned on making most of the clothes, but I can't make a hat. Any suggestions as to where to find one?

I have a high grade, custom made one, from the Jackson Hole Hat Company that was made as part of a project in which we anticipated a bunch being made up. It's a M1911 campaign hat of the early type, with brim stitching, etc. It's correct in details for the early 1911 type hat.

I don't know, however, if they'd make another. That one was a test hat and fit me, so I bought it (at a discount) when our project fell through. Since that time, they've been pretty busy and making the hat was a bit of a pain, given the details.

It depends, of course, on what you want in terms of quality and detail.

I have one from my scouting days and they stand up really good. Every hat is made to order.

Thanks for that one. Never heard of it, but I have seen ol' Dirty Billy's stuff before...

If you wear a 7 3/8, I'll sell you my Dirty Billy's 1898 hat - cheap! PM me.

Joel

Dang! I'm a 7 1/8... so close... thanks for the offer anyway.

Mike- as you can see above, I'm a 7 1/8. Why d'you ask?

Kodiak, I have an Akubra "Digger" slouch hat originally sold through Eddie Bauer. I got it off ebay, which listed it as a size 7 1/4 but it has obviously shrunk to a smaller size (too small for me). It's at least a 7 1/8, but possibly smaller. Overall good shape, greenish-khaki fur felt, bound brim, tan pug band. I was just about to put it back on ebay unless you're interested.

That's because the picture he has posted doesn't really look like what you get when you order one. Joel Tunnah ordered one from him...and that photo is like what he got. I'll post more when I have time...

Maybe one of the safari threadsters would like it even for the pug alone IMHO:eusa_doh:

This is what I ordered:

Your links are bad Dean, due to the use of frames on their website.

And yes, I called my order in on the phone because I was concerned about the sizing - since I'm a 7 3/8 very long oval. They assured me that this was "almost a 7 1/2", and the hat even says "7 3/8 - 7 1/2" inside. Sure enough, when the hat came it was a regular old 7 3/8, and the skull-crushing began in earnest. :eusa_doh:

Thanks. So i guess that if i'm a 7 1/4 long oval, the safest bet would be to consider a 7 3/8?

Definitely. The woman on the phone was nice enough, but like a lot of hat makers and retailers, all they care about is the circumference measurement - ie. 23", etc. The shape of your head seem unimportant to them. At first she wasn't even going to sell me anything other than a 7 3/8. I had to argue with her!

Also, I am positive the felt on these hats will shrink a good deal if you soaked them.
