I use a wooden coatrack to keep 2-3 hats handy. The rest are in boxes in a closet.

bowling pins

I mount bowling pins on the wall. They offer
a lot of support and don't leave dents. The hats
seem to float in the air...

Hats I don't wear as often stay in a box.

They go back in the box or bag.

Lots of moisture on the river, and I don't have screens on my windows. No use taking risks with mold or moths.

I leave one out and brush it often, usually one that I don't have a box for or use frequently. Right now it's my green one. I leave it on a glass head that I got from Pier One Imports.

I think keeping them in a box with moth balls is the best protection for a hat. You have no fear of miscreant bugs and the hat will keep its shape.
The bottom of the closet is fine for a hat that you want to look like something out of an East Side Kids or Bowery Boys movie though.

I have a hat rack for the hat I'm currently using, meaning those appropriate for the weather. At present, I have all my straws on the rack, since things are pretty warm and dry in L.A. My felts I keep in boxes in the closet or under the bed. When the weather gets cool, I will replace the ones on the rack with the felts (or maybe the heavier straws, like my Milan braid fedoras, which I love). During rainy season, I break out my rain hats made of cheap waterproof wool. My "specialty" hats -- my formal homburg, my Dickens top hat, my Sherlock Holmes fore-and-aft -- are all in various boxes in various places. And the antique straw boater that my wife acquired from some ancestor pretty much remains bagged up in storage.
