Right. It was about the same time that the word "teen-ager" came into the lexicon, around 1954-55. It was when Madison Ave. realized it had a new market . And that's how Elvis was born.
It originated with the "greaser" subculture of the 1950s, who usually wore jeans as something of a practical neccessity (when fixing and tinkering with ones motorcycle, workwear - the main use for jeans in this period - is afterall a sensible option). The Wild One (1953) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955) spread the image to the masses, who copied it.
