They're a fun people, the Chinese... and not much good at doing what they don't want to do. A lot of the time that'll be akin to herding cats. The popular Western image of the Chinese as little drones doing what they are told at all times doesn't reflect reality, however much it might suit folks here to believe, for whatever reason they want to. Beijing recently introduced a ban on smoking indoors in public places. I've seen Chinese flip over the 'no smoking' sign to use as an ashtray.

I was thinking more in terms of the Chinese government- at least in the U.S. it is portrayed as dogmatic, somewhat ruthless, not caring for it's people, and squashing individuality. But they are also Our Enemies so that's what drives the image presented by the media. I've seen the portrayal of Russia flip from Our Enemy to Our Friend and back to Our Enemy by the media in my lifetime.

Coffee.
Can anyone remember when you had the choice of four basic types? Black of white, with or without sugar, how the coffee was presented was usually pretty uniform, in a cup. Well, thats what we got in the UK. Now we get exaggerated cappuccino where half the drink is froth and Elvis or the Mona Lisa are depicted on the top. Skinny Latte's Mocha's and Flat whites are also there to confuse.
I never know what to ask for so ask for a white coffee with not a lot of froth. "Would that be a Cappuccino or Latte" would say the Cost a Fortune girl. "Errrrrr??????"
My parents owned a grocery store while I was growing up. We kids learned how to make coffee. There was regular (milk and sugar), light & sweet ( a touch more milk & sugar) and black with or without sugar. These came in small and regular.
If someone has asked for the milk to be frothed, we'd have tossed them out of the store for being some kind of pervert. ;)

That has been said in various ways since the beginning of politics. Do you deny the voracity of the claim or just its origin? In either case we can move on to: "One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics, is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."

Now, that Platonic line is the echte ding.

Remember, even Rene Descartes has been quoted as saying the one cannot entirely trust quotations which are found on the Internet.

The phrase "bucket list."

People who snort "White bread? Who eats white bread?" while eating a baguette.

Coin-counting machines that offer "fee free" service when you buy a gift card instead of taking the cash.

Thermocoupler wire with insulation that turns brittle and flakes off when exposed to heat.

The cocoanut-oil fad.

People who call things their "go-to" items.

50KW clear-channel AM radio stations that waste their signal on syndicated crap.

Self-sealing tape that sticks to itself before you can get it off the damn roll.

That green-screen technology that imposes virtual ads on the wall behind the batter during a baseball telecast.

People who call their TV set "the flatscreen."

People who think smoking "all natural cigarettes" is "healthy."

Restaurants that put romaine on your sandwich when you wanted plain lettuce.

Those little straws on the can of WD-40 that always get lost.

Deep-fried turkey kits.

Electronic slot machines.

Gentrification.

Excessive Road Construction
-- It seems like at any given time around here there's someplace where they're doing roadwork which snarls up traffic for months at a time. And it's not even the places that needs to be fixed!

Yeah, now he likes to sleep in the armchair. Last night I was sitting there reading and El Principe Luis was up on the mantle (the white object in the upper left hand side of the pic) and he practically jumped on my head! :p

Ha, yeah... mine have their spots like that, and you daren't usurp them...

Yeah, it is and it isn't. Certainly there are things you don't say over there (China has been an authoritarian culture for as long as China has existed, Revolution or no), though if you don't rock the boat most people seem pretty happy. It's far from perfect, but then some of what our own governments get up to... I'm not for throwing stones from here in the greenhouse, let's put it that way. Suffice it to say the PRC is not a system of government I'd choose, but equally it would be naive to unquestioningly accept our own states' take on everything.

Lizzie, WD 40 apparently listened to those of us who couldn't keep up with the little red straw.
I bought one of these for work a few years ago.

The straw won't come off, it's part of the nozzle.
So you can either do a general spray, or turn the straw out and do a direct spray. :D
It's my "go to" item when the doors on my Jeep start to stick. :eusa_doh:

Give me the regular straw. That new spray head gets clogged all the time and refuses to work without encouragement. I stopped using the can and get it by the gallon now. :p I can paint it on if I want to now. :p

Coffee...
The first thing I do when I get to the coffee shop counter is ask, "Do you have any coffee flavored coffee?" Half of the time this results in a blank stare on the face of the hipster behind the counter, and I leave. The other half of the time, if I get any response approximating a "yes" I order a large with "no whip (that's whipped cream, for the uninitiated), no foam," so the cup will be filled nearly to the top with nothing but coffee. And, yes, I refuse to order a "grande" or a "venti" or whatever other not-as-clever-as-they-think-it-is term for a large cup.

Excessive Road Construction...
Don't get me started. In August my wife and I drove from our house (about 15 miles east of Los Angeles) to a friend's house in Fresno, approximately 250 miles north. We encountered some form of road construction every 10-15 miles along the way, which increased our drive time by about an hour. It was as if the "suits" at Cal-Trans (the California Department of Transportation) were sitting around five years ago with nothing better to do, when one of them suddenly realized, "Hey, we haven't done anything to maintain California's freeways for decades. Let's fix them all at the same time!" :eusa_doh:

It wasn't like---it actually was. They have done nothing to the freeways---state wide until recently.
