The latest thing in drinks is shrub, which dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is made of fruit dissolved in vinegar.

The latest thing?

Haven't heard of that.

As the ram said to his girl-friend when she told him that she might be encente, "Ewe must be kidding!"

I suppose that now Perfection Salad, Salmon in Aspic and Harlequin Chicken are the new popular luncheon dishes.

I've been making shrubs for twenty-five years since I read recepies in my old standby cookbook "Housekeeping in Old Virginia", which book was recommended by both the Mesdames Grant and Hayes.

There was quite a vogue for shrubs back in the late 1920's, too, for they are particularly refreshing when refrigerated or served over ices, and are also a really fine cover for terrible boot-leg liquor.

There are people who would drink toilet water if it came in a "hip, skinny" can.

My brother used to drink pickle juice straight out of the jar. Now that's hip.

People will drink anything if you market it a certain way..

I've tried Red Bull, Monster and similar drinks on occasion and that s*** is Nasty! *yucky*

Red Bull is the only one of those overly sugar and caffeinated drinks I've tried. I took one sip of Red Bull and found it nasty. No wonder the hipsters mix it with vodka. Bad taste is the least of your issues when you are getting hammered..

Probably not that far divorced from a long pink gin.

I didn't miss it.
I like the taste of mine too, although my favorite blend is regular but with a smoky flavor.
Café Noir from Fresh Market.
It doesn't have a smoky taste like Folgers that's been in the pot all day, it's a pleasant taste to me.
Hence the "noir" part of the name, as an attempt to recreate a café with dark coffee and cigarettes going.
This from a guy that, as a kid, ate the coffee flavored candy and ice cream. :D

As for beer, I just started back drinking that, as a substitute for wine.
The only beer I considered going back to, was a former love of mine from the 90's (before I gave it up)...Guinness Extra Stout.
No fruity flavors, no seasonal spices, just the same beer they've been making for over 200(?) years.
If the store is out, I"d consider Killians Irish Red, but honestly I'd just go to another store. :D

The only smoky flavored thing I want to drink is Scotch.
I drank some Kona Blend today at a school meeting and I am still jittery from the damned stuff---even though I put a lot of cream in it. I can't understand the allure.

To think that we were way ahead of the curve with Jolt Cola back in the day. :p

When I was sick some years back I was on a medication that made me crave salt. I followed my brother's example and took to sipping pickle juice as a way of satisfying that craving, but the acid upset my stomach. So I'd throw in a spoonful of baking soda first -- and get a kind of fizzy pickle-flavored drink.

I bet I could bottle that now and make a pile of money. "Aunt Lizzie's Artisanal All Natural Pickle Soda." Add some ginseng, and the hipsters would beat a path to my door.

It also works for killing off the burning in your mouth when you eat something really spicy. Don't ask how I know. :p

The best thing to put out the spice fire in your mouth is sugar. Next time you happen to crunch into a Thai chile or habanero, don't reach for the fire hose, just grab a sugar packet and dump it in your mouth. You'll be good as new.

When crunching into Thai chilis or habaneros, the burning fire in your mouth is the least of your worries.

This is quite a good solution, pineapple juice is also mazingly effective.

Habaneros are delicious peppers, really flavoursome.
