What's beneath a bound brim?

I have a gray vintage Royal Stetson with a bound brim that is begging to unravel.
As I already a a couple of lids going out for renovation, I was wondering if it is possible to remove the edge binding and somehow obscure the stitching holes and end up with a serviceable raw edge?

I am not quite sure about being able to get rid of holes that are already there. The only sure way would be to cut the brim down past the holes and that would not be an option for me. :D
Since the hat is already felted and not likely to felt up the holes........[huh]

J

that is what I suspected... but thought maybe with hat sponge or something similar that will sort of rearrange the nap....>sigh<... oh well, I guess that'll be three to be renovated...

It is unfortunate if you wanted a raw edge but you can have it rebound and freshen up the whole hat. Do you have any pictures? I'd love to see it.
If it were me, I would send it to Art and have the ribbon, bound edge combination changed for a two tone or something like that but that is just what I would do. You could have it cleaned and reblocked while you are at it. :D

... Naw, I was just looking for a way to make it serviceable on the  cheap  'til such time as the ol' pursestrings loosen a bit, with two already going out for work, don't ya' know... (I am shipping an old NOS fawn Stetson 25 Range cowboy hat to Optimo and Graham is going to put "The Mitchum" block on it, trim & bind the brim & change the ribbon! He is also doing a refurb on a Stetson fifteen 3x with a mode ege. Then I am picking them up when I am through Chicago in a few weeks!)
The camera is tied up at work just now or I would post a photo of what I'm talking about.

I did an experiment with a Homburg.
I turned it into a Fedora.
The edge band had to come off in order to get the brim to lay right.
Cant see any of the holes.
I will probably have the edge rebound do to the fact that if you look close you can tell there was something there for fifty years.
Hope this helps.

The felt under the binding

You will likely find the felt edge color under the binding is darker, as the hat has faded where it is not covered. Same with the crown ribbon. I suggest having a hatter replace the binding. It will make the hat look new!

:eek:fftopic: And here you see the irony of our thread on wearing
hats in the rain. For many hats it is in fact the sun, not the
rain, that causes the most damage!

I'll never wear a hat outdoors again. ;)

What? Sun never shrank a hat. Rain never faded a hat. Both do different things.

Sun FADES...Rain SHRINKS...so, if you wear it in the rain, it will shrink and then fade if you wear in when the sun comes out on the same day. lol lol lol lol lol

I believe this post was about a person wanting to know what happens if you remove the binding from a bound edge hat. You will most certainly find that on vintage hats, the felt, under the ribbon, was protected from the ills of the sun fading the felt.

Rain? That affects the binding, ribbon, and felt.

I bet carrying an opened umbrella all the time will help shield your hat from both ills.
