Yes, but Tilda was great in Doctor Strange - a far more interesting take on the Ancient One than someone like say, James Hong would have been as a stereotypical wise old Asian. All of the now-embarrassing thirties Orientalism baked into Doctor Strange (based on stuff Stan Lee had absorbed back in his childhood like The Shadow, Lost Horizon, and especially Chandu the Magician) was a real problem with the material that they made an effort to de-emphasize. Of course, they weren't entirely successful. But at least they didn't have something like Alec Guinness in Asian makeup...

I agree. I think Tilda did a fascinating job in that role.

' Run All Night' (2015).....Pretty good action flick where you actually cared about the characters, even the bad guy (Ed Harris)......Liam Neeson wasn't bad either.

Red Beard, an Akira Kursosawa film from the sixties that I'd recently recorded from TCM.

It's about a young doctor's experiences working in a rural clinic run by Toshiro Mifune in nineteenth-century Japan. Like many of Kurosawa's films, it's long (over three hours) and a bit slow at times to modern eyes... but I really liked it. Mifune's "Red Beard" is a humanist who has no time for titles and conventions, doing heroic work among the poor, and the young doctor, after at first protesting that he's of the aristocracy and had expected to be appointed personal physician to the shogun, eventually comes around to understanding that the ordinary people need his skills more.

Interestingly, this story could be set in Europe or America and played exactly the same way, apart from the language and customs. Kurosawa's humanist streak - which may be a bit of a surprise if you only know his samurai films - is at its strongest here. Recommended.

Ah but remember as Kurosawa aged he actively de-mythologized the Samurai, i.e. "Kagemusha". Much like Eastwood has done with the gunslinging Cowboy and lone-wolf gunman.

I wasted two hours of my life last night watching "Arrival". What drek dressed up as a movie.
The acting was mediocre at best, Jeremy Renner looking like he just stepped off the set of The Big Bang Theory where he went to learn how to play a geek.
Forest Whitacre playing the serious black man with authority.....why do they always to cast him when they need that "type" .gah!, I hate shitty movies.

Of course, Worf. My point was merely that if you only know his samurai films - if you've never seen movies like Stray Dog, Ikiru, The Bad Sleep Well, Dodeskaden, Dreams - you're missing out on major aspects of his remarkable career.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" - Never noticed before how often they switch from sabers (usually at the start of a fight) to fencing foils (for the fancy stuff) and back to sabers for the payoff. Ronald Coleman at his finest!

"The Charge of the Light Brigade" - The only thing historically accurate in this film was that The Light Brigade DID in fact charge the Balaklava Heights during the Crimean War. The backstory is all hogwash, but MY what entertaining hogwash. Love how the Russian General is a dead ringer for "Uncle Joe" Stalin.

Mr. Holmes with Ian McKellen. Kind of disconcerting to see Sherlock Holmes as a 93-year-old man, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Ian McKellen.

A nice, quiet movie. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Not long in from seeing Hidden Figures. A beautiful film, and an important story I'm shocked not to have heard of long ago. Stunning performances all around; in a world where the Oscars meant anything worthwhile, this would be getting the attention heaped on the wildly overrated LaLa Land.

Living With Lincoln. Five generations of some really obscure people that every one should know. They amassed the largest collection of original Lincoln artifacts in the world and it literally killed two of them! If you have ever seen a photo of Lincoln, a penny, five dollar bill, Lincoln memorial or Mount Rushmore, you owe it to this family.
