Says 40s-50s motorcycle jacket.....

That looks like some sort of fencing apparel, or some kind of leather tunic one would wear if hunting with falcons. I'm pretty sure it is not motorcycle gear.

It's horsehide, so maybe it IS the armor.

Not a fencing master's jacket, no. The adversary's blade would get caught on the metal eyes and toggles and possibly snap off.

It's a shooting jacket. They were common in leather and in canvas with padded leather patches.

There are many cloth&/or leather models of rifleman's jackets.There are many combinations available but most incorporate;recoil pads,size adjustments for tight fit,pads to minimize felt pulse,etc.Google rifleman's jackets you'll find examples.
