The original idea was to attach it to the trouser belt, thus preventing the jacket from riding up while in motion on the bike - especially if the rider favoured a more crouched riding position. Obviously the trousers needed to be a sympathetic rise, or you'd be in trouble....
The modern equivalent is the short section of zipper teeth that can be seen on the inside lower back of some motorcycle jackets, designed to be mated to a corresponding set of zipper teeth in the matching trousers. Some of the advantage of a one-piece suit, without the inconveniences.
