A cutaway is a coat (usually dark grey or black) with long, curving tails in the back. (It's also called a swallowtail coat.) Diplomats used to wear them on formal day occasions; men also wore them at day weddings. Cutaways do not have silk facings on the lapels; they are in no way tuxedos.
So what you are saying is that this is a jacket/coat...not part of a suit? Would there be pants with it? In a different post someone made mention of cutaway coat would have striped pants...UGGHHH I'm so confused. I do have a bunch of pinstrip pants with no coats. I also have some sort of linen trousers that I have no idea what they go to. Little by little it's making sense
(I think lol).
This 1944 cutaway coat would almost certainly have been worn with grey pants (could be light or medium grey) with big (usually 1/8 inch) stripes. Not pinstripes: we're talking about fat stripes, usually in contrasting shades of grey, black and white.
In short: grey background with fat grey/black/white stripes.
