What hat for a NYC winter?

I'll be going to the Big Apple this Christmas to see my (still under construction) new nephew... oh yeah, and my sister and bro-in-law. lol

They currently live in Howard Beach but are getting ready to move to the upper West Side so we'll be going into Manhattan I'm sure.

What should I wear on my head?

My sister pointed out it may get a bit cold for just a fedora. What do I need to add, a different hat? Earmuffs?

I was in New York in March with my Akubra Federation and I was toasty. Further, I wear my Akubra here in Guelph on a regular basis, and the only issue I have is my ears get a bit chilly. To remedy that, I plan to pick up a pair of these:

There is a similar style that is a bit more plain that is also available, or you can get the 'ear sock' style that do not have the connecting bit.

Of course, for those REALLY cold days, or days when I'll be doing more outside then just going from room to class, I wear one of these:

Simply toasty.

Make the Big Apple the Baked Apple

Yes, Aaron and Steven both have great stuff to keep to keep your head warm, but I feel you should take a more holistic approach.

An elegant, but discrete Sterling Silver hip flask filled with your favorite spirit might fit the bill. In my youthful drinking days, Southern Comfort would have fit the bill.

Wait a minute. You're from Alaska so perhaps an aloha shirt and cut-off Levis might work well.

Have a safe enjoyable trip.

Didn't realize you'd be coming from Alaska.

If you happen to be passing through Toronto, drop me a line, we can go for a drink. Unless you are taking the practical route and flying, that is--It's tough to converse over a cocktail when one member of the party is at 30,000 feet :D

farnham,

Oh, I'll be flying. Driving without sleep and only stopping for gas it's more than a 24 hour day from Anchorage to the Northern border of the lower 48.

Plus, if I was going anywhere but NY, I'd be bringing things you can't take through Canada. I do like the earmuff/pod idea and a regular hat. It's the cold wind that gets me

analogist,

Oh, I definitely will have a flask. I learnt my herpetological safety from WC Fields. lol

Carebear:

To be honest with ya, wind doesn't cut through a fedora much. It'll make your face VERY cold, potentially, but a good scarf will help loads. The earmuffs don't let too much wind by either--90 percent of the insulating properties of those muffs comes from the ears being held close to the head.

Then again--Alaska--you know cold as well, if not better, then I do!!

Cheers

I wanted to dress a little nicer than my normal "Scott at the Pole" outdoor gear I wear when I'm out for any length of time. More like my "stride quickly from the warmed up car to my office" overcoat look, but warmer for the extremities.

I just get the idea from my prior trip there's more walking and standing outside involved in the city.

I guess I'll split the difference. I'll try it up here with just the regular lid and if I need more I can get one ordered prior to leaving, have it shipped to the City.

Last time I was in New York it wasn't Manhattan but Queens, anyway, very unexpectedly bitterly cold and WINDY. I'm still shivering! This chick packed a Wild One leather cap since I didn't want for my gal-fedora to blow off, but SHOULDA taken a Steve McQueen Navy watch cap. It's always appropriate. Yes, the Marlon Brando was cute and I got compliments but...BRRRR.

Just take one of your lids to NYC and if need be you can visit a local hatter to upgrade. You'd probably want to do that anyway.;)

It depends on the temperature and wind. I do not think December is too cold for a fedora in NYC. I always wear one.
If the temperature drops below freezing and it is windy this might make a difference. In that case I would wear one of those fuffy "bomber style" caps.
