I just scooped up a Stevens Milam today myself! 3 bucks at a thrift shop. Stevens I feel is very underrated.

You're 100% right. This brim is way too big. It's almost 4 inches. I got the hat for free from a friend and love the felt, but the brim is way too big for me. I am looking for a place to have the brim trimmed to about 2.25 inches and rebound. However, I am not sure where to go since this hat has a unique binding on the brim (maybe a Cavanagh edge? -- I don't really know brim style lingo), and I would like the retain this brim treatment. I'm not sure I can go to a regular hatter here in Houston to get the right edge on a trimmed brim. Maybe you Loungers have some suggestions?

Art Fawcett at Vintage Silhouettes is always a good choice for changing and refurbishing hats. I've gotten a panama western redone to a plantation style and cleaned, and they are currently cleaning and putting on a new ribbon for a vintage Cavanagh boater my dad found at a yard sale for $1.

See if you can post a close up of the brim. If it's a Cavanagh, and you want to keep that, you can't get the brim trimmed. If it's an expertly executed underwelt, a hatter should be able to trim and put an underwelt on it. Cavanagh edges are created during the felting process, so it can't be recreated.

This appears to be a bound edge so I would think a skilled hatter could reduce the brim and re-bind it for you.

I'm sure there are many expert descriptions of all the established edge treatments in this forum, although as a new arrival, I wouldn't know where to search first!

Otherwise, I recently posted a very nerdy explanation - with photos - about Cavanagh vs underwelt vs overwelt vs raw edge vs bound edge on my Facebook page a while ago. But I wouldn't presume to inflict that on Loungers.
