But Alan ... it just takes a plane-ticket lol

I don't own any nutrias, but the clean nutrias I've been close to were quite coarse. On the other hand I have handled some alleged rabbit/nutria blends that were extremely soft. I was told, that the nutria's fur is quite a bit coarser, and that it's guardhairs (the most coarse part of the fur) are scattered all over the animal - not only on the back as on the beaver.

I would like to dive a little deeper into the subject. As long as I live, I have stuff to learn - which makes life a pretty darn interesting place to reside ;)

+1. We don't, of course, have any idea how much nutria fur was used for this. I will make a note to get over to Denmark so that we can discuss in person. It will be much more enjoyable!

You shall be so very welcome, Alan. I would love to show you CPH - and I might even be able to hook you up with a little mermaid :D

Well, the mermaid statue is about natural sized - and actually not very well sculptured - so I've heard many Americans talk a little disappointed about her after seeing her. But we do have lots of other things, worth experiencing ;)

Please excuse the mirror selfie, my photographer is otherwise indisposed atm. My brand new Banjo Paterson, This is a departure from my normal 30's style tall and straight crowned fedoras. What is your guy's opinion of it on me?

I have the same hat - and I like it as much on you as I do on myself. Nothing wrong with a lower, slightly tapered crown. I think the dimensions of the BP are just great, and it's a hat that will take an absolute beating (I know as I've given mine plenty of abuse, and it still looks great).

My nutria is no such thing. It is very soft.

... as are mine. I was referencing another member's comments on the character of nutria felt. Nutria (like beaver and hare) can display many characteristics that are more a reflection of the techniques and tastes of the era than limitations of the material itself. And our knowledge of the actual composition of the fur felt, short of a composition label, is really only a guess. I remember visiting a local hatter with my first prized vintage Borsalino purchases (which I was certain were 1930s hats) and being told that each was made from beaver. As I learned more, I came to learn that they were 1950s hats at the earliest, most likely made from hare.

Absolutely! I'm convinced that many of the old high-priced "company flagships" (incl. the light Knox 100 drooler) were made from more or less complex blends. Even a modern 100% beaver body from a main American or European supplier is made from a blend of several types/qualities of beaver fur. I think, Stetson's top-line of westerns are made form a beaver/chinchilla(/who-knows-what) blends. I haven't seen much documentation on blends from the American branch of the industry, but Steve has found and posted some interesting stuff from the European branch.

Ooops ... and great looking cap, 1mach1 ;)

If you have a chance, post an interior photo of your Stetson - is it also a Fifteen?

Alan... Here are a couple of interior shots as well as one of the brim treatment.

The hat is an Imperial, rather than a Fifteen. While I have repeatedly read the thread on Stetson quality designations, I cannot recall how Fifteens compare to Imperials. Although I suspect that the Fifteen is older. In any event, they certainly appear close to identical.

Your comparison between the Fifteen and the Cavanagh was great. You have one heck of an amazing collection!

Hey guys I'm fairly new well considering this my first post, I have been contemplating getting an Art Fawcett custom. I'm thinking of getting a dark gray such as a charcoal with a chocolate ribbon and bound edge. I saw this hat somewhere on google and simply love the hat this would be a first hat so I must inquire on any remarks or suggestions from the loungers any input will be appreciated, a side note thinking a 2 1/2 or 2 5/8ths inch brim. -thankyou

I don't see the stitching below the edge binding on outside indicating that the reverse side binding is wider. It may be that way but I don't see it on those gorgeous hats.

The Stetson edge binding extends the same amount on both sides of the brim and is sewn straight through (as it would be on a flat Open Road brim). The Cavanagh is more involved. The binding is sewn to the brim on the front of the curl and then rolled around to hide the stitch. On the inside of the curl it extends further (5/16") and is secured with two rows of stitches that are not visible on the front of the curled brim. Neither my wife or I could figure out how this is done.

Thanks for posting - your Imperial is beautiful. It may well be earlier than mine. The Stetson Fifteen was the price equivalent of 3X beaver quality at $15. The Imperial Stetson that I have is late 1930s-1940 and is also marked 3X beaver. I'm not sure where the 1950s Imperial lined up price wise, but I bet the information is stored on the Lounge in one of our Stetson threads.

A great selection on Thursday. I got back late from a work's Christmas meal, so didn't get a chance to comment individually, but they're a swell selection. The work's Christmas do seemed to be a good opportunity to wear a hat that I've barely worn since I picked it up - the colour is just a little too bold, but it suited last night (American Legend (BB)):
