Got two more from Moon. This time he sent me pictures, not just Instagram links.
The first three are of a 1940 Portis "The New Slant".
The rest are of a "Circa 1940's Playboy... Near mint. The mark you see near the size tag is just a sticker I never bothered to try to remove. "

Very nice! I’ve been looking for a Portis a long time, and that Playboy is incredible.

Thanks, Brent. Now I only have to bring all the hats I bought from my long-suffering brother-in- law's to Mexico.
Bet he's already regretting agreeing to receive them.

Glad to see you end up with the Portis! That was one of the best of a lot of hats I bought at an auction in Joplin, Missouri a while back -- unfortunately none of them fit me. @Redfokker (Mike) has a New Slant similar to yours and a Dobbs from that same auction. Congrats on all the new hats from the "Moon" collection!

I figured out how to download Moon's Instagram pictures. I am posting all of them on this one, since I find it so beautiful.

Moon said this was one of his best hats.
And to think I only used to like Optimos. Was I ever so young? :)

Early 1950s OPS era Dobbs Cross Country.... extremely lightweight travel hat .

Greetings All:
In spite of some most stellar feller hat’s of late. I’m still walkin in circles over Doc’s CC and Tuk’s Black Cherry!!!
I will continue on with today’s diminutive Borsalino.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing an unlined Vagabond you would appreciate this little guy. So comfy and light! Unreeded, corrugated sweat. No name in Caffe.
Be well. Bowen

VERY nice hat!

I find it interesting that this is such a fine hat, yet it has no liner. No slight intended; I know lots of folks get enjoyment out of the different styles and types of liners, but to be honest I don't care for them at all. Being about half-bald on top with a very short haircut on what's left, I don't use any hair dressing. I hate the feeling of the loose liner on bare skin, and it only seems to add to the heat retention on warmer days. As soon as I get a hat, out comes the liner! Before some of you head my way with tar and feathers, I only do this with current production hats like Akubras or random off-brand Ebay finds. There are practically no older hats available in my big size, so the vintage hats are safe from mutilation! The two custom hats I have ordered have both been speced specifically to not have liners.

Looks like I will have to keep a close eye out for a big ol' Dobbs Cross Country!

Thanks for sharing!

I am certainly no expert, but I have noticed that hats that are supposed to be lightweight, for travelling, less heat retention, and comfort, are unlined. Optimo in Chicago also does this with their lightweight model

Just a thought Woodtroll. Being like-haired i appreciate non-liners as well. But, i find if one is bothersome i can change the crease and utilize the crown better to not touch my scalp. Depends on the hat and whether it is problematic. Not all are. Imho

Several models from many different makers came unlined. It’s rarer today.

I’ve commissioned some of my custom with the liner unattached (just tucked under the sweat) so I can easily remove it when temperatures warm up. Although, to be honest, most of the felt hats are too warm for summer wear liner or not.

Thank you, Bob! I am certainly glad you bought the lot of hats, and that I ended up with one of them!

Tell the truth, I didn't even know what I was buying. I just knew that Moontheloon has an excellent reputation in the lounge for his knowledge of vintage hats, that when he posted them people were very impressed, and that he "has a heart of gold," in the words of a fellow lounger I consider a new-found friend.

At first I just wanted the Borsalinos, but I thought I'd better take advantage of an incredible opportunity to learn about Crofuts and Knappses, Adams, Mallories, Knoxes, Portises, Stratoliners, Open Roads, Playboys, Cross Countries, etc., and feel those famous felts in my hands.
Now I will know what people are talking about in the threads.

I skipped years of learning, yearning and searching, and of dealing with Paypal
And all of this from a very reputable, knowledgeable, and dependable source.

Hell, even the prices were fair. No charge for the time, expertise, patience and connections it took to find and gather all those gems.
I think this was the first time in my life I felt it a privilege to be allowed to buy.

I feel really lucky.

Thank you so much, Anthony.
