But then there's the Thunder Bay... Black with dark brown collar or cordovan with rust... decisions, decisions. What I like about the TB is that fully buckled up it combines the warmth of, say, an Irvin with the waterproof qualities of a standard FQHH jacket.

I cannot detect any noticeable drop on the front panels of the jacket. The zip length is 22"-I don't know what vintage the jacket is as it was a Ebay purchase-The previous owner kindly left me his dice!

Oh, hang on.... do you mean a 'drop front' panel shape? My lack of clarity - I meant a drop in measurement from chest to waist. I can wear a 42 chest in an Aero MC, but there is such a sudden drop at the waist in terms of size across the hem (smaller on a size 42 MC - don't know about other models, this is the basic Perfecto style) than a size 42 HB.... must be about 38"...

lol I remember that episode. I think he wore a Perfecto-style jacket in that one, if my memory's right. Perhaps a LL?

Most like a much cheaper alternative.... Lewis were, afaik, still in operation throughout the Eighties, but I'm not sure if they were doing the Bronx then (It was into the early ninieties where Derek, the current owner, revamped the classic designs and they went with a more consciously retro feel across the range). Back in the 80s, the Perfecto type was very muvh in fashion and cheap versions easily acquired on market stalls.... as a one-of prop of that type, it's most likely they picked up a cheapo somewhere... Actually, they may well have pulled it in from the BBC Wardrobe department, which back then was still a BBC resource (it's since been privatised, I believe, or at least established as a separate, charging, facility which programmes need to build into their budget)... I must try and have a lookout and see if I can find it when I'm net on a fast web connection and have Google access.....

Haven't seen this show in a while... I need to re-watch Rock 'n' Chips one again. I remember when it came out, the reception was very bad and I've only really seen one episode of it though I didn't think it was really that awful at all. The characters were well written and fun, and I though young Dell did just fine. As for how well they did his style, I'm going to have to take your word on it, though. Unlike Rockers, Mods didn't really spread outside the UK, at least not in the same extent, so I'm quite lost to this particular subculture... :D

It was repeated on the History channel(!) ni the UK over a recent bank holiday weekend. I remembered it as being watchable enough, but it was actually much better than I recalled. The young fella (James Buckley?) from The Inbetweeners was an inspired choice to play Del, really nailed the character without it becoming a hammy impression.

But then there's the Thunder Bay... Black with dark brown collar or cordovan with rust... decisions, decisions. What I like about the TB is that fully buckled up it combines the warmth of, say, an Irvin with the waterproof qualities of a standard FQHH jacket.

Yes, has to be done. My next three will be an M422a (with AVG patches), a black Thunder Bay, and a Sunburst in Russet goat. Funnily enough, back around November 2012, I was starting to think about a jacket very much like the TB.... I wanted a black jacket that would be an equivalent of an Irvin or a B3. Schott do a Civilianised B3 in black, but I wasn't sure about it.... started thinking about ordering up a black HWM with a shearling lining and a block mouton collar. I was still kicking this idea around when Aero launched the Thunder Bay. I'm still a tiny bit in two minds about whether to go for the rust or the black mouton, but otherwise the standard TB is ideal. I suspect it will be a tiny bit warmer than the Irvin with the extra leather layer on the outer, but that's no problem for Winter....

Yes,I was thinking of the drop panel front of the Aero Dustbowl-Please see comparison picture. The King Of The Road picture is probably a STF for the Japanese market so possibly not a good comparison. The measurements relate to my jackets however. For the future,I'm contemplating an Aero 30's Premier Highwayman in brown FQHH

Is the Maxwell the same as a Stuart?

I believe the Maxwell is basically a halfbelt with a button front. It's a very similar design to the Stuart (or, at least, the Stuart was based on the same 30sHB to begin with), but a different pattern. When Will Lauder was invited to leave Aero, Ken/Aero announced that the Stuart design belonged to Will, and so they would no longer be carrying it. Always seemed odd to me that AL didn't do a version of the Stuart thereafter, but there you go.

Yes, indeed, Maxwell.... the 30's fit half belt with a dropped/sloped and button front. From the various posts of the jacket, it appears the "drop" is more or less noticeable, depending upon the jacket's size. As I understand, Maxwell/Stuart, the same.

I only bought the sunburst because it was available on eBay through Thurston brothers and it was in a beautiful grainy russet vicenza. I wouldn't have bought that model otherwise but now I love the art deco look to it. Always been a fan of the maxwell and the only other that calls to me is the rockafella. It screams vintage design.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I also noticed that the chest pocket on the Stuart has a button/loop fastener, while the Maxwell doesn't. In any case, it's a great looking jacket!

Hmmm.... don't know HOW I missed this one.

1. Aero Thunder Bay in black with rust collar.

2. Bootlegger in Jerky Horse.

3. Aero Long Half Belt in Brown.

I've others... but those are my top 3.

Interesting. The pattern seems to have been tweaked a bit compared to the back on my test jacket:

Yours was certainly a solid template from which to work...

- MyDustbowl has a standard Talon main zipper (not Hookless).
- OD green stitching throughout.
- Top front yoke.
- No top chest pocket.
- Black moleskin lining and pockets.
- Cotton Drill sleeves.
- Stitched down gussets on back so that jacket wears longer, w/out bat-wing effect - thanks Wade ;)
- D-ring fasteners on side cinch belts.

I'm very conservative in what I like in leather. Not too many seams or pockets, no flaps, no knits. Only in goat or lighter horse hide and only with cotton drill lining.

I really like:

The Hercules long half-belt - I'd get it without pocket flaps in Jerky HH.

The Rockafella - (probably too many seams, but what a great look). In goat.

The Plainsman - a longer, "short" half-belt. In jerky HH.

The Premium 1930's half-belt. Goat or light HH.

Don't know that I'll ever get these, but if I see something close on sale, maybe.
