What are these things? (Cufflinks and...?)

Hi folks.

I find myself puzzled. Today while clearing out their closets and doing some tidying, my mother came across a little brown box which she gave to me. She said it was my father's, but since he never uses it anymore, she reckkoned I should have it.

When I opened it, this is what I found inside:

A nice little pair of cufflinks.

My question is, what are these things?

There's two of them, but they're not a pair. The darker one (on the right) is two inches EXACTLY, the shinier one on the left is exactly 1 & 15/16ths inch long. And as you can see...they unscrew.

What are they and what are they for?

Collar bars,.....worn under the knot of your tie to sort of prop it out so it looks sharp,..and to keep the collar nice and straight.http://www.absoluteties.com/collarbars.html,.........see also- http://www.menssuitguide.com/mens-suits/mens-suit-accessories/mens-collar-bars-pins-clips/mens-collar-bars-pins-clips.html

Thanks for the help, guys & gals. I guess you all confirmed what I already suspected...that they were in-fact collar-bars. Somehow, I never imagined that my dad would wear these...He's about as informal as you could go.

By the way...any idea what the black stuff is on the cufflinks?

Thanks for the opinion, Tom.

In other news, after discovering that mum had given me his cufflinks and collar-bars, dad gave me his old, gold-plated tie-chain! All this stuff makes me want to wear a suit and look snappy...

Here's another shot showing the bars, links and chain:

Yep. Collar bars.
Here is a box of bars I have.

I don't think it is in this group but the most interesting one I have is where the "arms" are baseball bats with a ball on the end!

Edit. Found it!

A beautiful collection, Feraud.

Sadly, I probably will never get a chance to wear my father's collar-bars due to the type that they are. However, I could still use the tie-chain and the cufflinks. I intend to wear the links when I go out tomorrow...

You might be able to.. there are a couple of modern shirt makers that sell shirts with the collar bar holes.
There is also the custom route if you want to have at least one shirt made.

If you're happy to order from the UK, try www.savillerowco.com

The White Pin Collar Formal Fitted Shirt:

http://www.savilerowco.com/products/men/mens-white-shirts/pin-collar-formal-fitted-shirt/pid-348wht

Comes with a chrome bar (which gives you a silvertone one for evening wear...). Usually GBP30, though if you're on their mailing list, you can often find them marked down much further in various 48 hour email offers. I only wish they'd do this design in other colours - I'm seriously considering dying a few....
